Symposium - macronutrient utilization during exercise: implications for performance and supplementation.

چکیده
The review articles constitute a mini-symposium entitled “Macronutrient Utilization During Exercise: Implications for Performance and Supplementation” that were recently presented at the 2004 annual conference of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in Las Vegas, NV. Much controversy often surrounds macronutrient intake, utilization, and subsequent metabolism regarding exercise and athletic performance. Furthermore, the role of macronutrient supplementation with the specific intent of improving body composition and exercise performance by way of nutrient timing is also an important issue. As such, the articles provide a comprehensive overview of metabolic and performance-enhancing implications regarding carbohydrate, fat, and protein.

The Effect of Chronic Intake of L-carnitine L-tartrate on Lipid Metabolism during Aerobic Exercise
Background & Aims: Despite 20 years of research, there is no compelling evidence about the effect of carnitine supplementation on improving physical performance in healthy subjects. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of long term consumption of acute L-carnitine L-tartarate (LCLT) on fat metabolism and aerobic capacity. Methods: A total of 28 healthy nonathlete male students rece...
متن کاملSymposium: Limits to fat oxidation by skeletal muscle during exercise--introduction.
Lipids, in the form of adipose tissue triacylglycerol (TG), intramuscular triglyceride (IMTG), and dietary-derived fatty acids (FA) from plasma TG (chylomicrons), and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), represent the largest store of nutrient energy in humans. Yet despite the abundance of endogenous TG, there is limited capacity for FA oxidation during exercise: there are no mechanisms that m...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF 6 WEEKS OF WATERMELON JUICE SUPPLEMENTATION ON THE ACTIVITY OF CK AND LDH ENZYMES AND EXERCISE PERFORMANCE IN ELITE FEMALE TAEKWONDO ATHLETES
Background & Aims: Using nutritional supplements is proposed to avoid the stresses-induced by physical activity, delayed fatigue, and maintenance of performance during competition. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of 6 weeks of watermelon juice supplementation on the activity of CK and LDH enzymes and exercise performance in elite female taekwondo athletes. Materials & Methods: ...
متن کاملEffects of dietary macronutrient distribution on resting and post-exercise metabolism
Background Previous research has demonstrated that habitual dietary macronutrient distribution affects energy substrate utilization at rest and during exercise. The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the relationships between habitual baseline macronutrient intakes, expressed relative to bodyweight and percentage of total energy intake, and metabolism at rest and after exercise...
متن کاملEffects of macronutrient intake on fuel utilization: potential sex differences
Background Evidence suggests that women oxidize more fat for fuel at rest than males. Potential sex differences in fuel utilization during exercise remain unclear. Alterations in diet may influence substrate utilization by altering substrate availability and metabolic enzyme activity. Reduced carbohydrate (CHO) intake has been shown to lower respiratory exchange ratio (RER) over time, which may...
