A Comparative Analysis of Different Integration Approaches Between UMTS and WLAN Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
The rapid evolution of wireless and mobile communication technologies raises the challenge of satisfying different technology features in a unified architecture. For example, while WLAN technologies provide QoS and high data rates, they lack the wide coverage and powerful mobility management supported by UMTS. On the other hand UMTS users suffer from lower QoS compared to WLAN. Looking at the combined benefit of both heterogeneous networks is the motivating factor of UMTS/WLAN integration, the very hot research topic in the literature. This paper proposes different solutions for UMTS/WLAN integration and vertical handover problems. The solution is based on an implementation of two coupling schemes that are later enhanced to support handover solutions. The work involves network simulation and comparative analysis for the proposed solutions, as well.

Analyzing service integration between UMTS & WLAN network
Much of interest has been involved in integrating UMTS and WLAN networks in order to take full advantage of the two. In such an integrated network, UMTS subscribers can access to UMTS services through 3G or WLAN access networks. This is highly desirable because network operators will use WLAN hotspots to increase network coverage, while offering subscribers with high-speed connections to 3G net...
متن کاملCommon radio resource management for WLAN-UMTS integration at radio access level
WLAN-UMTS integration in the UMTS-based approach can be performed either at the UMTS Core Network (CN) or Radio Access Network (UTRAN). Both interworking solutions provide the operator with additional license-free bandwidth and promise good handover performance. Integration at the radio access level has the advantage that the UMTS core network protocols remain unaffected and the interworking ar...

The wireless communication with delivering variety of services to users is growing rapidly in recent years. The third generation of cellular networks (3G), and local wireless networks (WLAN) are the two widely used technologies in wireless networks. 3G networks have the capability of covering a vast area; while, WLAN networks provide higher transmission rates with less coverage. Since the two n...

The integration of complementary wireless technologies in order to achieve “anywhere, anytime and on any device” ubiquitous services is the core idea of Next Generation Networks (NGN). In order to achieve this goal the NGN will integrate different network access technologies. One of the most attractive ideas is the design and implementation of a UMTS / WLAN interworking architecture. Mobility M...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of Ubiquitous Wireless Connectivity in a 3G/IEEE 802. 11 Integrated Network
UMTS networks promise to offer always on, ubiquitous connectivity with relatively low data rates for moderate to high mobility users in macro cell environments. On the other hand, IEEE 802. 11 (WLAN) offers much higher data rates, comparable to 3G and other wireless local area networks, to users with low mobility characteristics in smaller cell environments. Where UMTS/WLAN networks overlap, a ...
