Sensitivity of seismic wide-angle wave-field and first arrival times to fine scale crustal structure and Moho topography

چکیده
A sensitivity study of stochastic crustal and Moho models on Moho refracted first arrivals is presented. The crustal model is a self-affine velocity structure superposed on a linear velocity gradient. The Moho is represented by a first-order discontinuity with a topography which is also self-affine. The sensitivity of both travel-time and wave-field is considered. We found that the full wave-field around the Pn arrival is sensitive to crustal structures down to 1 km, and to Moho undulations down to 5 km. However, the first arrivals are only sensitive to crustal structure down to about 3 km, and to Moho structure down to 10 km. Our analysis suggests that the wide-angle full wave-field has a sensitivity that is intermediate between the sensitivity of the vertically reflected wave-field and wide-angle arrival times. These findings give some justification to the mainstream ray tracing approach to wide-angle data inversion, where resulting models incorporate only a moderate number of features at relatively large scales.

Case Studies of Seismic Tomography and Earthquake Location in a Regional Context
We present three case studies of traveltime tomography applied to regional imaging of the earth's crust and upper mantle. The first case study investigates the imaging of Poisson's ratio using measurements of compressional and shear wave traveltimes. Inversions schemes that jointly fit both types of traveltime data and that selectively damp the compressional to shear wave velocity ratio are sho...
متن کاملThickness of Crust in the West of Iran Obtained from Modeling of Ps Converted Waves
Receiver functions are usually used to detect Ps converted waves and are especially useful to picture seismic discontinuities in the crust and upper mantle. In this study, the P receiver function technique beneath the west Iran is used to map out the lateral variation of the Moho boundary. The teleseismic data (Mb ≥5.5, epicentral distance between 30˚-95˚) recorded from 2004 to 2016 at 17 perma...

[1] We estimate crustal structure and thickness of South America north of roughly 40°S. To this end, we analyzed receiver functions from 20 relatively new temporary broadband seismic stations deployed across eastern Brazil. In the analysis we include teleseismic and some regional events, particularly for stations that recorded few suitable earthquakes. We first estimate crustal thickness and av...
متن کاملShort Note Frequency-Dependent Crustal Correction for Finite-Frequency Seismic Tomography
Removing the crustal signature from teleseismic travel times is an important procedure to reduce the trade-off between crustal and mantle velocity heterogeneities in seismic tomography. Because reverberations of longand short-period body-wave arrivals in the crust affect the waveforms of the direct arrivals differently, the crustal effects on travel times measured by waveform cross correlation ...

High-quality seismic data obtained from a dense broadband array near Kimberley, South Africa, exhibit crustal reverberations of remarkable clarity that provide well-resolved constraints on the structure of the lowermost crust and Moho. Receiver function analysis of Moho conversions and crustal multiples beneath the Kimberley array shows that the crust is 35 km thick with an average Poisson’s ra...
