Importation of poliomyelitis to industrialised nations between 1975 and 1984: evaluation and conclusions for vaccination recommendations.

چکیده
World Health Organisation and public health authority records show that 175 cases of paralytic poliomyelitis were imported to industrialised countries between 1975 and 1984. Detailed case reports were therefore analysed to identify characteristic features associated with acquisition of the infection. Of the 175 cases, 96 (55%) were diagnosed in foreign workers or their families, 47 (27%) in nationals travelling on holiday or business, 11 (6%) in immigrants, and 21 (12%) either in contacts who had not travelled or in unclassified groups. Poliomyelitis principally affected children under 5, but travellers aged 41-65 had the highest case fatality rate. The main serotype isolated was poliovirus type 1. The findings suggest that though fewer than one in every 100,000 travellers may be infected by poliomyelitis, all travellers and all immigrants, refugees, and foreign workers should be given full protection against all three polioviruses by routine vaccination.

Importation of Poliomyelitis by Travelers
To the Editor: In July 2007, an Australian traveler imported polio from Pakistan to Australia (1). He was a 22-year-old man who had immigrated to Australia and had traveled to his country of origin (Pakistan) to visit friends and relatives. Pakistan is one of 4 countries (Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, Pakistan) where polio is still endemic. A diagnosis of polio was made shortly after his return ...

BACKGROUND Compliance with official recommendations can be assessed by evaluating vaccination coverage (VC) in populations. The main objective of our study was to assess VC of adults against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis and pertussis (dTPaP) according to age. The second objective was to explore if vaccination status could be confirmed by documentation. METHODS A cross-sectional study wa...
متن کاملPoliomyelitis: Current Status in Iran and Worldwide
Poliomyelitis (polio) is a highly infectious viral disease, which mainly affects young children. The virus is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through the faecal-oral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle (e.g. contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system and can cause paralysis. Initial symptoms of polio include ...
متن کاملAustralia's polio risk.
Australia, like all polio-free countries and regions, remains at risk of a wild poliovirus importation until polio is eradicated globally. The most probable route of importation will be through a traveller arriving in Australia either by air or sea from a polio-endemic or re-infected country. While the overall risk of an imported wild poliovirus infection leading to transmission within Australi...
