Horizontal Motion Detection by the Blowfly H1 Neuron

چکیده
Electrophysiological recordings are often performed in animals which require significant preparation and training. The blowfly, on the other hand, is a readily accessible model for this technique because of its large size and characterized cells. One of these cells in particular, H1, is known to respond preferentially to horizontal visual movement (Eckert, 1980). The goal of this project was to become proficient in basic electrophysiology by targeting H1 and driving its activity through a programmable arena of LEDs.

The blowfly visual system is frequently used in vision experiments, and is attractive because of its simple preparation and small scale. H1 is well-suited for these experiments because of its large size and its ease to record from. Because it is four synapses away from the retina, it may be seen as similar to cells in visual cortex. It responds primarily to horizontal full-field motion, and is ...

Blowflies (scientific name Calliphora erythrocephala) possess multiple classes of visually responsive neurons. Of particular interest to this study is the H1 neuron, which responds to large-field horizontal motion by integrating responses from multiple horizontally selective (HS) cells near the retina [1] and generating action potentials at larger frequencies for movement in the preferred direc...

Naturalistic stimuli, reconstructed from measured eye movements of flying blowflies, were replayed on a panoramic stimulus device. The directional movement-sensitive H1 neuron was recorded from blowflies watching these stimuli. The response of the H1 neuron is dominated by the response to fast saccadic turns into one direction. The response between saccades is mostly inhibited by the front-to-b...
متن کاملMotion adaptation leads to parsimonious encoding of natural optic flow by blowfly motion vision system.
Neurons sensitive to visual motion change their response properties during prolonged motion stimulation. These changes have been interpreted as adaptive and were concluded, for instance, to adjust the sensitivity of the visual motion pathway to velocity changes or to increase the reliability of encoding of motion information. These conclusions are based on experiments with experimenter-designed...
متن کاملTiming and Counting Precision in the Blowfly Visual System
We measure the reliability of signals at three levels within the blowfly visual system, and present a theoretical framework for analyzing the experimental results, starting from the Poisson process. We find that blowfly photoreceptors, up to frequencies of 50-100 Hz and photon capture rates of up to about 3 · 10/s, operate well within an order of magnitude from ideal photon counters. Photorecep...
