چکیده

The case-based reasoning (CBR) process solves problems by retrieving prior solutions and adapting them to t new circumstances. Many studies examine how case-based reasoners learn by storing new cases and reening the indices used to retrieve cases. However, little attention has been given to learning to reene the process for applying retrieved cases. This paper describes research investigating how a case-based reasoner can learn strategies for adapting prior cases to t new situations, and how its similarity criteria may be reened pragmatically to reeect new capabilities for case adaptation. We begin by highlighting psychological research on the development of similarity criteria and summarizing our model of case adaptation learning. We then discuss initial steps towards pragmatically reening similarity criteria based on experiences with case adaptation.

Estimating the Parameters for Linking Unstandardized References with the Matrix Comparator

This paper discusses recent research on methods for estimating configuration parameters for the Matrix Comparator used for linking unstandardized or heterogeneously standardized references. The matrix comparator computes the aggregate similarity between the tokens (words) in a pair of references. The two most critical parameters for the matrix comparator for obtaining the best linking results a...

Adaptation-Guided Retrieval: Questioning the Similarity Assumption in Reasoning

One of the major assumptions in Artificial Intelligence is that similar experiences can guide future reasoning, problem solving and learning; what we will call, the similarity assumption. The similarity assumption is used in problem solving and reasoning systems when target problems are dealt with by resorting to a previous situation with common conceptual features. In this article, we question...

The Adaptation of English Initial Clusters by Persian Learners

This study presents an overview of the different strategies that Persian learners of English employ to deal with initial clusters. While vowel epenthesis appears to be the most widespread repair strategy to conform such clusters to Persian phonotactics, the location of the epenthetic vowel varies. In this paper, we investigate two approaches that seek to explain the epenthetic site. The first o...

Framework for Case-based Reasoning to Support Idea Association in a Brainstorming Session

This research makes use of a cognitive approach to explore a mechanism for associating ideas in a brainstorming session. Firstly, we propose a linking model integrating three principles of idea association (similarity, contrast and contiguity) with two processes of case-based reasoning (retrieval and adaptation). Based on this linking model, an experiment is conducted to elucidate the interacti...
