چکیده
Using grizzly bears as surrogates for "salmon ecosystem" function, the authors develop a generalizable ecosystem-based management framework that enables decision makers to quantify ecosystem-harvest tradeoffs between wild and human recipients of natural resources like fish.

The role of human outdoor recreation in shaping patterns of grizzly bear-black bear co-occurrence
Species' distributions are influenced by a combination of landscape variables and biotic interactions with other species, including people. Grizzly bears and black bears are sympatric, competing omnivores that also share habitats with human recreationists. By adapting models for multi-species occupancy analysis, we analyzed trail camera data from 192 trail camera locations in and around Jasper ...
متن کاملPredicting Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos) densities in British Columbia using a multiple regression model
We determined the relationships between Grizzly Bear density and ultimate measures of ecosystem productivity and mortality at a landscape scale using multiple linear regression and field based density estimates from Grizzly Bear populations across western North America. We found that Grizzly Bear densities in non-coastal environments were positively related to the mean annual rainfall, to the p...
متن کاملInjury to People Inflicted by Black, Grizzly or Polar Bears: Recent Trends and New Insights Author(s):
We update or extend data presented by Herrero (1985). Injury rates were low, 1980-1985. The highest rates were 317,700 and 328,645 park visitors per injury inflicted by black or grizzly bear in Kluane and Denali National Parks. Injury rates calculated against number of backcountry user nights were significantly higher for all parks where injuries occurred, but this exaggerates the danger from b...
متن کاملHuman Injuries Inflicted by Bears in British Columbia: 1960–97
There is controversy in British Columbia regarding how dangerous bears are. Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) population estimates range from 10,000–13,000; black bears (U. americanus), 120,000–160,000. From 1960–97, significantly fewer grizzly bears inflicted about 3 times as many serious injuries (N = 41 versus 14) but the same number of fatal injuries (N = 8) as black bears. The trend in terms of ...
