Acceleration and Cyclotron Radiation, Induced by Gravitational Waves
نویسنده
چکیده
The equations which determine the response of a charged particle moving in a magnetic field to an incident gravitational wave(GW) are derived in the linearized approximation to general relativity. We briefly discuss several astrophysical applications of the derived formulae taking into account the resonance between the wave and the particle’s motion which occurs at ωg = 2Ω, whenever the GW is parallel to the constant magnetic field. In the case where the GW is perpendicular to the constant magnetic field, magnetic resonances appear at ωg = Ω and ωg = 2Ω. Such resonant mechanism may be useful to build models of GW driven cyclotron emitters.

Wave-induced loss of ultra-relativistic electrons in the Van Allen radiation belts
The dipole configuration of the Earth's magnetic field allows for the trapping of highly energetic particles, which form the radiation belts. Although significant advances have been made in understanding the acceleration mechanisms in the radiation belts, the loss processes remain poorly understood. Unique observations on 17 January 2013 provide detailed information throughout the belts on the ...
متن کاملAcceleration of low energy charged particles by gravitational waves
The acceleration of charged particles in the presence of a magnetic field and gravitational waves is under consideration. It is shown that the weak gravitational waves can cause the acceleration of low energy particles under appropriate conditions. Such conditions may be satisfied close to the source of the gravitational waves if the magnetized plasma is in a turbulent state.
متن کاملTransparency of magnetized plasma at the cyclotron frequency.
Electromagnetic radiation is strongly absorbed by a magnetized plasma if the radiation frequency equals the cyclotron frequency of plasma electrons. It is demonstrated that absorption can be completely canceled in the presence of a magnetostatic field of an undulator, or a second radiation beam, resulting in plasma transparency at the cyclotron frequency. This effect is reminiscent of the elect...
متن کاملCosmological Shock Waves in the Large Scale Structure of the Universe: Non-gravitational Effects
Cosmological shock waves result from supersonic flow motions induced by hierarchical clustering of nonlinear structures in the universe. These shocks govern the nature of cosmic plasma through thermalization of gas and acceleration of nonthermal, cosmic-ray (CR) particles. We study the statistics and energetics of shocks formed in cosmological simulations of a concordance ΛCDM universe, with a ...

Gravitational waves provide a laboratory for general relativity and a window to energetic astrophysical phenomena invisible with electromagnetic radiation. Several terrestrial detectors are currently under construction, and a space-based interferometer is envisioned for launch early next century to detect test-mass motions induced by waves of relatively short wavelength. Very-long-wavelength gr...
