A Nitrogen Fixation: The Story of the Frankia Symbiosis

چکیده
a large input of energy and can occur either biologically, within the cells of various bacteria, or chemically, in fertilizer factories or during lightning storms. Among all living organisms, only bacteria have evolved the complex biochemical mechanisms required for nitrogen fixation. All "higher" plants and animals that are said to fix nitrogen are really only the symbiotic partners of the bacteria that do the actual work. Among plants, the cultivated legumes (peas, beans, peanuts, etc.) are the best-known nitrogenfixers, but many plant families besides the Leguminosae can also fix nitrogen. On a worldwide scale, these nonlegumes, as they are somewhat negatively called, fix as much nitrogen

Inhibition of auxin signaling in Frankia species-infected cells in Casuarina glauca nodules leads to increased nodulation.
Actinorhizal symbioses are mutualistic interactions between plants and the soil bacteria Frankia spp. that lead to the formation of nitrogen-fixing root nodules. The plant hormone auxin has been suggested to play a role in the mechanisms that control the establishment of this symbiosis in the actinorhizal tree Casuarina glauca. Here, we analyzed the role of auxin signaling in Frankia spp.-infec...
متن کاملIsolation of Mutants of the Nitrogen-Fixing Actinomycete Frankia
Frankia is a nitrogen (N)-fixing multicellular actinomycete which establishes root-nodule symbiosis with actinorhizal plants. Several aspects of Frankia N fixation and symbiosis are distinct, but genes involved in the specific features are largely unknown because of the lack of an efficient mutant screening method. In this study, we isolated mutants of Frankia sp. strain CcI3 using hyphae fragm...

Microbiologist, Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Riverside, Calif. Abstract: Presently available data indicate that biological dinitrogen fixation is responsible for the greatest proportion of nitrogen entering chaparral ecosystems. Dinitrogen fixation by the Rhizobium-legume symbioses is relatively unimportant in chaparral w...
متن کاملNew insights in the molecular events underlying actinorhizal nodulation in the tropical tree Casuarina glauca
Background Actinorhizal root nodules result from the interaction between a nitrogen-fixing actinomycete called Frankia and roots of dicotyledonous trees and shrubs belonging to 8 plant families and 25 genera. Most actinorhizal plants are capable of high rates of nitrogen fixation comparable to those found in legumes. As a consequence, these trees are able to grow in poor and disturbed soils and...

Symbioses between plants and nitrogen (N) fixing bacteria are ecologically and economically important interactions with complex evolution and ecology. Theoretical and experimental studies suggest that host specificity and environmental variation are important determinants of both evolutionary and ecological patterns in such interactions, but detailed descriptions of these parameters in natural ...
