Portable Tabletops: A Low-Cost Pen-and-Touch Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes the design and implementation of a lowcost portable tabletop to be used in classrooms. This solution enables pen and touch interactions over a projected canvas. Twelve users participated in a user study that gauged the system’s effectiveness to support drawing and moving objects on the surface. Additionally, a stress test to evaluate users’ identification was conducted. Results showed that the system exhibited a fair effectiveness when users draw or move objects. Average errors of 5.6% to 6.5% were found when differentiating users. In general, the proposed tabletop is a promising solution at an affordable price; nevertheless, three key challenges need to be addressed before a full deployment of the solution: a better precision to draw complex shapes, a better gesture intepretation when rotating objects and achieving a minimum error for user differentiation.

Actuated Translucent Controls for Dynamic Tangible Applications on Interactive Tabletops
We present a novel type of tangible controls for interactive tabletops: actuated general-purpose widgets that are used to manipulate digital data on interactive tabletops. Due to their transparency the visual appearances can be changed dynamically. Unlike previous approaches, our widgets can be arranged and configured on the tabletop by employing an array of electromagnets beneath the multi-tou...

Tabletop displays are mostly used for casual applications that do not require intricate graphics or precise manipulation. Browsing photographs and maps are common applications. A higher resolution is required to support work involving detailed graphics and text. A display the size of a desk, with the resolution of a typical LCD monitor, will have around 14 megapixels. Tabletop displays are usua...

We describe an ethnographic study that examines how low-tech and high-tech surfaces support creativity and collaboration during a workshop breakout session. The low-tech surfaces included post-it notes, flipcharts, and walls. The high tech surface comprised a multi-touch tabletop. Input was either by pen or fingertips. The breakout session comprised four groups using the different surfaces and ...
