Gilbert damping tensor within the breathing Fermi surface model: anisotropy and non-locality

چکیده
In magnetization dynamics, the Gilbert damping α is often taken as a parameter. We report on a theoretical investigation of α, taking into account crystal symmetries, spin–orbit coupling and thermal reservoirs. The tensor α is calculated within the Kamberský breathing Fermi-surface model. The computations are performed within a tight-binding electronic structure approach for the bulk and semi-infinite systems. Slater–Koster parameters are obtained by fitting the electronic structure to first-principles results obtained within the multiple-scattering theory. We address the damping tensor for the bulk and surfaces of the transition metals Fe and Co. The role of various contributions are investigated: intraand interband transitions, electron and magnetic temperature as well as surface orientation. Our results reveal a complicated non-local, anisotropic damping that depends on all three thermal reservoirs.

A Novel Integrated Approach to Modelling of Depletion-Induced Change in Full Permeability Tensor of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs
More than half of all hydrocarbon reservoirs are Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (NFRs), in which production forecasting is a complicated function of fluid flow in a fracture-matrix system. Modelling of fluid flow in NFRs is challenging due to formation heterogeneity and anisotropy. Stress sensitivity and depletion effect on already-complex reservoir permeability add to the sophistication. Horiz...

The propagation of magnons in temperature gradients is investigated within the framework of an atomistic spin model with the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation as underlying equation of motion. We analyze the magnon accumulation, the magnon temperature profile, as well as the propagation length of the excited magnons. The frequency distribution of the generated magnons is investigated ...

The magnetization dynamics of a single domain ferromagnet in contact with a thermal bath is studied by scattering theory. We recover the Landau-Liftshitz-Gilbert equation and express the effective fields and Gilbert damping tensor in terms of the scattering matrix. Dissipation of magnetic energy equals energy current pumped out of the system by the time-dependent magnetization, with separable s...

The Gilbert damping constant present in the phenomenological Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation describing the dynamics of magnetization is calculated for ferromagnetic metallic films as well as Co/nonmagnet (NM) bilayers. The calculations are done within a realistic nine-orbital tight-binding model including spin-orbit coupling. The convergence of the damping constant expressed as a sum over the...

We review the non-Fermi or marginal liquid behavior of a relativistic QED plasma. In this medium a quasiparticle has a damping rate that depends linearly on the distance between its energy and the Fermi surface. We stress that this dependence is due to the long-range character of the magnetic interactions in the medium. Finally, we study how the quark damping rate modifies the gap equation of c...
