been reported at 2 per 100,000 admissions over a period of 20 years at one center. The overall mortality associated with mesenteric ischemia is between 60% and 93% but rises precipitously once bowel wall infarction has occurred. Mortality remains greatest for acute mesenteric ischemia resulting from obstruction or embolic phenomena. Patients with an early manifestation of NOMI have mortality rates of 50% to 55%, whereas patients with mesenteric vein thrombosis have a 15% mortality at 30 days. Those affected by chronic mesenteric ischemia have a more prolonged course, are relatively protected by dual blood supply, and present the physician with more numerous chances for intervention.

The role of CT in acute mesenteric ischemia

Results Only 12 patients (37.5%) performed a preoperative diagnostic CT study, whereas in 20 cases (62.5%) the intestinal ischemia was diagnosed during surgical exploration. The acute mesenteric ischemia caused primarily by occlusive superior mesenteric artery in 26 cases (81.2%) and by venous thrombosis in 6 cases (18.7%). Most of the embolus are located approximately 3–10 cm from superior mes...

Successful medical management of acute mesenteric ischemia due to superior mesenteric and portal vein thrombosis in a 27-year-old man with protein S deficiency: a case report

BACKGROUND Acute mesenteric ischemia poses a diagnostic challenge due to nonspecific clinical clues and lack of awareness owing to its rarity. Ischemia due to mesenteric venous thrombosis has a good prognosis compared to arterial cause and can be managed conservatively with early diagnosis. The portomesenteric venous system is an unusual site of thrombosis in patients with protein S deficiency,...

Acute occlusive mesenteric ischemia in high altitude of southwestern region of Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Mesenteric ischemia which can be acute or chronic depending on the rapidity of compromised blood flow produces bowel ischemia, infarction, bacterial transmigration, endotoxemia, multisystem organ failure and death. High altitude can precipitate thrombosis because of hypobaric hypoxia and its effect on coagulation system. The objectives of this study are to determine th...

99mTc-MDP bone scan guides in the identification of mesenteric vein thrombosis

A 50-year-old man with postprandial abdominal pain, weight loss, and generalized body ache was referred to Nuclear medicine department for a whole body bone scan to look for any malignancy. Clinical examination did not reveal any specific positive findings. He underwent aTechnetium-99m Methylene Diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) bone scan which showed no obvious bone pathology. But there was...

Management of gut ischemia

Ischemia of the intestine may manifest with different clinical features, each one requiring a specific diag nosis and treatment approach. Early identification and treatment of acute mesenteric ischemia is cru cial to improve prognosis. For that purpose, early angiography followed by surgery or a direct laparo tomy in critically ill patients is warranted. Embolec tomy and bowel resection for...
