Generation of Electron Plasma Waves in the Upstream Solar Wind
نویسندگان
چکیده
Electron plasma waves with amplitudes as high as 10 mV/m have been measured in the electron foreshock region of the earth's bow shock. It is shown that a population of stable suprathermal electrons of the type observed can produce the measured level of enhanced fluctuations without becoming unstable. The steady state wave level is given by the balancing between emission and absorption. The apparent association of fluctuation enhancements with sharp changes in electron fluxes can be understood in terms of modification of the electron distribution due to acceleration processes. The expected 2%,e radiation from the model is consistent with the observations.

Langmuir waves upstream of interplanetary shocks: Dependence on shock and plasma parameters
[1] We have examined 178 interplanetary shocks observed by the Wind spacecraft to establish which shock and plasma parameters are favorable for the production of upstream Langmuir waves and therefore to determine which shocks are likely to generate interplanetary Type II radio bursts. Of the 178 shocks included in this study, 43 produced upstream Langmuir waves, as evinced by enhancements in wa...
متن کاملResonance Absorption of Alfv•n Waves at Comet-solar Wind Interaction Regions
he interaction of the low frequency (10 -• Hz) MHD waves, observed upstream of comets, with the structured plasma near the cometary bow wave is examined. It is suggested that the waves undergo resonant absorption due to either ambient density gradients or localized shear in the background magnetic field. The absorption process can give rise to rapid heating of the solar wind protons, in agreeme...
متن کاملProgress on Coronal, Interplanetary, Foreshock, and Outer Heliospheric Radio Emissions
Type II and III solar radio bursts are associated with shock waves and streams of energetic electrons, respectively, which drive plasma waves and radio emission at multiples of the electron plasma frequency as they move out from the corona into the interplanetary medium. Analogous plasma waves and radiation are observed from the foreshock region upstream of Earth’s bow shock. In situ spacecraft...
متن کاملGeneration of Alfvén Waves by Small-Scale Magnetic Reconnection in Solar Spicules
Alfvén waves dissipation is an extensively studied mechanism for the coronal heating problem. These waves can be generated by magnetic reconnection and propagated along the reconnected field lines. Here, we study the generation of Alfvén waves at the presence of both steady flow and sheared magnetic field in the longitudinally density stratified of solar spicules. The initial flow is assumed to...
متن کاملOn Collisionless Electron-Ion Temperature Equilibration in the Fast Solar Wind
We explore a mechanism, entirely new to the fast solar wind, of electron heating by lower hybrid waves to explain the shift to higher charge states observed in various elements in the fast wind at 1 A.U. relative to the original coronal hole plasma. This process is a variation on that previously discussed for two temperature accretion flows by Begelman & Chiueh. Lower hybrid waves are generated...
