چکیده
Each year over 140 million tons of petroleum-based polymers are produced worldwide and used in the production of such plasticsaspolyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, and others. Mostly using oil, coal, and natural gas as raw materials for their manufacturing, these plastics are common in every facet of our lives from the pharmaceutical industry to household use. Approximately 10% of all the oil and gas that the United States produces and imports is used in the production of synthetic plastics, and the market is expected to grow at a rate of up to 15% per year. While these products hold up well to our fast-paced, throwaway society, disposed plastic materials can remain in the environment for up to 2,000 years and longer. In 2005, the U.S.

Charlotte Y . Kim The Fantastic Bioplastic ! An Investigation of the Relationship Between Bioplastic Composition and Tensile Strength
Objectives/Goals This project was designed to determine how varying the amount of a specific ingredient that constitute a bioplastic mixture can affect tensile strength. I hypothesized that if more glycerin is added to a mixture of cornstarch, water, vinegar, and glycerin, then a bioplastic with increased tensile strength and flexibility will be produced. Methods/Materials Mold, 40 bioplastics ...
متن کاملRevisiting the Single Cell Protein Application of Cupriavidus necator H16 and Recovering Bioplastic Granules Simultaneously
Cupriavidus necator H16 (formerly known as Hydrogenomonas eutropha) was famous as a potential single cell protein (SCP) in the 1970s. The drawback however was the undesirably efficient accumulation of non-nutritive polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) storage compound in the cytoplasm of this bacterium. Eventually, competition from soy-based protein resulted in SCP not receiving much attention. Neverthele...
متن کاملPretreatment and Anaerobic Co-digestion of Selected PHB and PLA Bioplastics
Conventional petroleum-derived plastics are recalcitrant to biodegradation and can be problematic as they accumulate in the environment. In contrast, it may be possible to add novel, biodegradable bioplastics to anaerobic digesters at municipal water resource recovery facilities along with primary sludge to produce more biomethane. In this study, thermal and chemical bioplastic pretreatments we...
متن کاملA Software-defined Radio Approach for Direction Finding
The increasing demand for wide bandwidth wireless communication in the context of a finite available frequency spectrum has led to an acute need for spectrum-efficient technologies. One solution is the Cognitive Radio approach, a device aware of the environment and able to modify its own parameters accordingly in order to optimize the performance. An important capability that leads to a higher ...
متن کاملFacility arrangements, food safety, and the environmental performance of disposable and reusable cups
Conventional disposable cups, made of fossil-based plastic or paper with inner lining of fossil-based plastic, are typically associated with an unnecessary use of scarce resources and a superfluous production of waste. An alternative has become available in disposable cups from bio-based and biodegradable materials, so-called biocups, made from bioplastic or paper with inner lining of bioplasti...
