چکیده

We revisit the evaporation process of gas from dwarf galaxies after it has been photo-ionized by the UV flux from the first stars and AGNs and heated to T ≃ 10 or 2 × 10K respectively. Earlier estimates, based on the balance between pressure and gravity, indicated that dark haloes of virial velocity lower than Vevap ≃ 11−13 kms −1 have lost most of their gas in a dynamical time. We follow the continuous evaporation by a thermal wind during the period when the ionizing flux was effective. We find that the critical virial velocity for significant evaporation is significantly higher. For example, if the ionization starts at zion = 10 and is maintained until z = 2, a mass loss of one e-fold occurs in haloes of Vevap ≃ 25 (or 35 kms ) for T ≃ 10K (or 2×10K). Haloes of Vevap ≃ 21 kms −1 (or 29 kms) lose one e-fold within the first Hubble time at z = 10. Any dwarf galaxies with virial velocities smaller than Vevap must have formed their stars from a small fraction of their gas before zion, and then lost the rest of the gas by photo-evaporation. This may explain the gas-poor, low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal galaxies. By z < 1, most of the IGM gas was evaporated at least once form dwarf galaxies, thus providing a lower bound to its metallicity.

Chemical Abundance Ratios and Gas-phase Mixing in Dwarf Galaxy Evolution

Because of their low gravitational energies dwarf galaxies are greatly exposed to energetical influences by the interstellar medium, like e.g. stellar radiation, winds or explosions, or by their environment. While the metallicity depletion in dwarf galaxies can be explained in general by supernova-driven galactic winds, the reason for their low N/O ratios at low O abundance is not yet completel...

The Photo-Evaporation of Dwarf Galaxies During Reionization

During the period of reionization the Universe was filled with a cosmological background of ionizing radiation. By that time a significant fraction of the cosmic gas had already been incorporated into collapsed galactic halos with virial temperatures ∼< 10 K that were unable to cool efficiently. We show that photoionization of this gas by the fresh cosmic UV background boiled the gas out of the...

Dwarf galaxies in voids: Suppressing star formation with photo-heating

We study structure formation in cosmological void regions using high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations. Despite being significantly underdense, voids are populated abundantly with small dark matter halos which should appear as dwarf galaxies if their star formation is not suppressed significantly. We here investigate to which extent the cosmological UV-background photo-evaporates baryons ou...

The baryonic mass - velocity relation ; clues to feedback processes during structure formation and the cosmic baryon inventory

We show that a global relation between baryonic mass and virial velocity can be constructed from the scale of dwarf galaxies up to that of rich galaxy clusters. The slope of this relation is close to that expected if dark matter halos form in the standard hierarchical cosmogony and capture a universal baryon fraction, once the details of halo structure and the adiabatic contraction of halos due...
