چکیده
The paper proposed that predation, especially that which prevented spatial monopolization by a competitively dominant species, maintained or enhanced local species diversity. The viewpoint was supported by a controlled field experiment involving starfish removal, and observed subsequent decline in community species richness. [The SCI indicates that this paper has been cited over 275 times since 1966.]

متن کاملTowards a food web perspective on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning
One of the most common questions asked by researchers across a variety of scientific disciplines is ‘How does the number of nodes connected together into a network influence the efficiency and reliability of that network?’. While social scientists and epidemiologists might think of ‘nodes’ and ‘connections’ as people interacting within a social network, computer scientists, neurologists, and ci...
متن کاملAquatic food-webs’ ecology: old and new challenges
Looking up ‘‘aquatic food web’’ on Google provides a dizzying array of eclectic sites and information (and disinformation!) to choose from. However, even within this morass it is clear that aquatic food-web research has expanded greatly over the last couple of decades, and includes a wide array of studies from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. This book attempts to bring together and...

"In 1963 I was a graduate student in ecology at the University of Washington. Many of my fellows and mentors were studying the competitive relations among similar species, and they were in need of a simple measurement to condense dietary data for two animals into a single number expressing their similarity. I invented such a measure and modified another due to Morisita, and my measures were use...

This list of the North American vegetable cultivars was developed using the database of cultivars registered with the American Seed Trade Association, as well as published descriptions from scientific journals and seed catalogs. Assistant editors responsible for each crop were instructed to obtain as much information as possible about the cultivars available to North American growers. The crop ...
