چکیده

The ab initio cluster model approach has been used to study the origin of the magnetic coupling in La2CuO4 and, also, its pressure dependence. Use of different cluster models and different ab initio wave functions permits the identification of the three leading mechanisms of magnetic coupling. These are the delocalization of the magnetic orbitals into the anion ‘‘p’’ band, the electronic correlation effects, and the collective effects hidden in the two-body operator of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. The first two mechanisms are almost equally important and account for 80% of the experimental magnetic coupling constant value, the remaining 20% being due to the third effect. For the pressure dependence we predict J}r with n'8.4 in agreement with experiment. Surprisingly enough these mechanisms are exactly the same previously found for KNiF3 but with different contributions to the value of the magnetic coupling constant.

Absence of collective effects in Heisenberg systems with localized magnetic moments

Existence of collective effects in magnetic coupling in ionic solids is studied by mapping spin eigenstates of the Heisenberg and exact nonrelativistic Hamiltonians on cluster models representing KNiF3, K2NiF4, NiO, and La2CuO4. Ab initio techniques are used to estimate the Heisenberg constant J . For clusters with two magnetic centers, the values obtained are about the same for models having m...

Magnetic coupling constants from a hybrid density functional with 35% Hartree-Fock exchange

The magnetic coupling constants of KCuF3, Sr2CuO2Cl2, La2CuO4, La2NiO4, K2NiF4, KNiF3, NiF2, KMnF3, and MnF2 are calculated with a hybrid density functional, in which 35% of the nonlocal Hartree-Fock exchange is mixed in the general gradient approximation to the density functional theory. The theoretical magnetic coupling constants for these materials with different structures, spins, and magne...

Antiferromagnetic Exchange Interactions from Hybrid Density Functional Theory

A hybrid theory which combines the full nonlocal “exact” exchange interaction with the local spindensity approximation of density-functional theory is shown to lead to marked improvement in the description of antiferromagnetically coupled systems. Semiquantitative agreement with experiment is found for the magnitude of the coupling constant in La2CuO4, KNiF3, and K2NiF4. The magnitude of the un...

Thermal conductivity of doped La2CuO4 as an example for heat transport by optical phonons in complex materials

We investigate the phonon thermal conductivity κph of doped La2CuO4 based on out-of-plane thermal conductivity measurements. When room temperature is approached the temperature dependence of κph strongly deviates from the T -decrease which is usually expected for heat transport by acoustic phonons. Instead, κph decreases much weaker or even increases with rising temperature. Simple arguments su...
