Detection and classification of underwater targets by magnetic gradiometry

چکیده
SHORT ABSTRACT: This paper describes the theoretical analysis of a method to detect and classify objects from magnetic maps. The method, originally designed to detect buried UXO by land survey with a magnetometer, is adapted here for underwater survey with a gradiometer. Evaluation is performed on simulated data in order to predict the performance of the adapted algorithm to this new situation. We have simulated a gradiometer composed of three magnetometers that measure the intensity of the magnetic field. The paper presents results obtained by the classification algorithm using the gradient maps as input to locate the targets and estimate their depths and magnetic moments. Examples illustrating the influence of the sampling grid and errors in the location of the gradiometer underwater on the detection and classification performance are also presented.

Room-temperature magnetic gradiometry with fiber-coupled nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond.
Differential optical detection of a magnetic resonance induced in nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond is shown to enable a high-spatial-resolution room-temperature magnetic-field gradiometry on a fiber platform. An ultracompact design of this fiber-based solid-state magnetic gradiometer is achieved by integrating an NV-diamond magnetic sensor with a two-fiber opto-microwave interface, whic...
متن کاملA Novel Detection Method for Underwater Moving Targets by Measuring Their ELF Emissions with Inductive Sensors
In this article, we propose a novel detection method for underwater moving targets by detecting their extremely low frequency (ELF) emissions with inductive sensors. The ELF field source of the targets is modeled by a horizontal electric dipole at distances more than several times of the targets' length. The formulas for the fields produced in air are derived with a three-layer model (air, seaw...

A former radioactive waste disposal site is surveyed with two non-intrusive geophysical techniques, including magnetic gradiometry and electromagnetic induction. Data were gathered over the site by towing the geophysical equipment mounted to a non-electrically conductive and non-magnetic fibre-glass cart. Magnetic gradiometry, which detects the location of ferromagnetic material, including iron...

People who attend to the problem of underwater port protection usually use sonar based systems. Recently it has been shown that integrating a sonar system with an auxiliary array of magnetic sensors can improve the effectiveness of the intruder detection system. One of the major issues that arise from the integrated magnetic and acoustic system is the interpretation of the magnetic signals comi...
متن کاملMagnetic-Gravity Gradient Inversion for Underwater Object Detection
A new underwater object detection method based on joint GravityGradient and Magnetic-Gradient Inversion algorithms is proposed in this paper. Magnetic gradient and gravity gradient anomalies induced by an underwater object can be measured and inversed to estimate the relative changes in distance between underwater object and underwater vehicle. The weight least squares estimation is introduced ...
