Nutr, 403-412,1980 Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronary heart disease (CHD) are important non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in developed as well as developing countries. Migrant South Asians have an unusually high predisposition to develop both the NCDs'. Rapid nutritional transition and urbanization have resulted in an alarming increase in NCDs in India, while the communicable diseases are showing a downward trend. During the previous three decades, the prevalence ofT2DM has doubled in both rural and urban areas of India2.
