Application of Statistical Catch-at-Age Models to Assess Lake Whitefish Stocks in the 1836 Treaty- Ceded Waters of the Upper Great Lakes

چکیده
Commercial-fishery statistics were integrated with biological data from the fishery to develop statistical catchat-age models of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) in the 1836 treaty-ceded waters of the upper Great Lakes. Fishery yield and effort were adjusted to account for underreporting and increases in height of gillnets. Biological inputs to models included maturity, age composition, mean weight of fish, and sex ratio of spawners. Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) mortality was estimated separately from the modeling process and 1 Corresponding author: [email protected]

An evaluation of alternative assessment approaches for intermixing fish populations: a case study with Great Lakes lake whitefish
We used simulation modeling to explore how three statistical catch-at-age approaches for assessing intermixed fisheries performed in terms of assessment accuracy andmanagement performance, under differing productivity, mixing, and harvest levels. Simulations were based on intermixing lakewhitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) populations in theupper LaurentianGreat Lakes ofNorthAmerica. We found tha...
متن کاملInvestigation of Sardinella Sindensis (Day, 1878) Stock Status Using the Catch-Maximum Sustainable Yield Model in the Southern Waters of Iran (Persian Gulf and Oman Sea)
Among the various species of small pelagic fish, Sardinella sindensis (Day ,1878) has high economic and ecological importance and is one of the most important species exploited by fishermen. In recent years, the catch rate of this species has increased, and due to the limited data available on its stock in southern waters, it is not possible to use models based on the complementary data to asse...
متن کاملDynamics of Fisheries that Affect the Population Growth Rate Coefficient
Conventional surplus production models indicate that destruction of fish populations by overfishing is difficult, if not impossible, but catastrophic declines in abundance of exploited populations are common. Surplus production models also do not predict large continuing fluctuations in yield, but large fluctuations in yield are common. Conventional surplus production models assume that fisheri...
متن کاملChanges in Diet and Body Condition of Lake Whitefish inSouthern Lake Michigan Associated with Changes in Benthos
—We evaluated the long-term trends of the benthic macroinvertebrate community (1980–1999) and biological attributes of lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis (1985–1999) in southeastern Lake Michigan. We also determined what food types were important to lake whitefish in an area where the amphipod Diporeia had not yet declined in 1998 and how the diet of lake whitefish changed as Diporeia declin...
متن کاملCatch per unit efforts and impacts of gears on fish abundance in an oxbow lake ecosystem in Eastern India
Background: Oxbow lakes are abundant in indigenous fishes, but they are subject to unsustainable fishing practices, potential overexploitation, and indiscriminate use of fine-meshed fishing gear. To quantify the catch per unit effort (CPUE) and impact of fishing gears on fish abundance, a survey was carried out in an oxbow lake in eastern India. Methods: The gear-wise CPUE for fish caught in...
