چکیده

How can we uncover the natural communities in a real network that allows insight into its underlying structure and also potential functions? In this paper, we introduce a new community detection algorithm, called Attractor, which automatically spots the communities or groups in a network over time via local dynamic interaction. The basic idea is to envision a network as a dynamical system, and each agent interacts with its local partners. Instead of investigating the node dynamics, we actually examine the change of “distances” among linked nodes. As time evolves, these distances will be shrunk or stretched gradually based on their topological structures. Finally all distances among linked nodes will converge into a stable pattern, and communities can be intuitively identified. Thanks to the dynamic viewpoint of community detection, Attractor has several potential attractive properties: (a) Attractor provides an intuitive solution to analyze the community structure of a network, and faithfully captures the natural communities (with high quality). (b) Owing to its time complexity O(|E|), Attractor allows finding communities on large networks. (c) The small communities or anomalies, usually existing in real-world networks, can be well pinpointed. (d) Attractor is easy to parameterize, since there is no need to specify the number of clusters. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world networks further demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach. Keywords-community detection; interaction model; network

A Review on Overlapping Community Detection Algorithms

Community structure is an important feature of complex networks and social network communities refer to groups of individuals within which social interactions are intense and between which they are weak. Community detection algorithms answer a wide range of questions regarding the behavior and interaction patterns of people. Usually, communities in social network can overlap with each other. De...

Community detection in dynamic networks via adaptive label propagation

An adaptive label propagation algorithm (ALPA) is proposed to detect and monitor communities in dynamic networks. Unlike the traditional methods by re-computing the whole community decomposition after each modification of the network, ALPA takes into account the information of historical communities and updates its solution according to the network modifications via a local label propagation pr...

Co-community Structure in Time-varying Networks

Networks consisting of vertices and edges connecting some pairs of vertices are powerful abstractions of relational data, hence have become very popular tools in many fields including sociology, biology and physics [1]. The characteristic of community structure in networks, i.e., networks are naturally divided into modules or communities, has attracted huge attention in the past decade which ca...

Community Detection using a New Node Scoring and Synchronous Label Updating of Boundary Nodes in Social Networks

Community structure is vital to discover the important structures and potential property of complex networks. In recent years, the increasing quality of local community detection approaches has become a hot spot in the study of complex network due to the advantages of linear time complexity and applicable for large-scale networks. However, there are many shortcomings in these methods such as in...

Community Detection Approaches in Real World Networks: A Survey and Classification

Online social networks have been continuously evolving and one of their prominent features is the evolution of communities which can be characterized as a group of people who share a common relationship among themselves. Earlier studies on social network analysis focused on static network structures rather than dynamic processes, however, with the passage of time, the networks have also evolved...
