A Resolution-Based Decision Procedure for the Two-Variable Fragment with Equality

چکیده
The two-variable-fragment L≈ of first order logic is the set of formulas that do not contain function symbols, that possibly contain equality, and that contain at most two variables. This paper shows how resolution theorem-proving techniques can be used to provide an algorithm for deciding whether any given formula in L≈ is satisfiable. Previous resolution-based techniques could deal only with the equality-free subset L2 of the two-variable fragment.

Using Resolution as Decision Procedure
This cumulative habilitation thesis is based on five papers related to resolution decision procedures. Resolution is a well-known technique for first-order theorem proving. It is complete, but it does not terminate in general, when there exists no proof. In many cases, resolution can be modified in such a way that it becomes a decision procedure for certain subclasses of first-order logic. We h...
متن کاملA Superposition Decision Procedure for the Guarded Fragment with Equality
We give a new decision procedure for the guarded fragment with equality. The procedure is based on resolution with superposition. We argue that this method will be more useful in practice than methods based on the enumeration of certain finite structures. It is surprising to see that one does not need any sophisticated simplification and redundancy elimination method to make superposition termi...
متن کاملTransonic Turbulent Flow Simulation using Pressure-Based Method and Normalized Variable Diagram
A pressure-based implicit procedure to solve the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations on a nonorthogonal mesh with collocated finite volume formulation is described. The boundedness criteria for this procedure are determined from Normalized Variable diagram (NVD) scheme. The procedure incorporates the ε−k eddy-viscosity turbulence model. The algorithm is tested for inviscid and turbulent transonic ...
متن کاملCombining Resolution Decision Procedures
We present resolution-based decision procedures for the guarded, two-variable and monadic fragments without equality in a uniform way and show how they can be combined. In this way, new decidable fragments are obtained. We make use of a novel technique for describing resolution decision procedures by means of clause schemes. The scheme notation provides a convenient way of specifying decision p...
متن کاملDesign of Manufacturing Cells with Two- Phase Model and A Heuristic Algorithm
A Two-phase model for configuring a cellular manufacturing system is proposed. In phase (I), for the first time, number of cells is considered as a decision variable. In phase (II), pursing two different objectives, one minimization of underload and the other, maximization of similarity of parts within a group, the design procedure is performed. As one cannot have these two objects together, a ...
