Customer-Base Valuation in a Contractual Setting: The Perils of Ignoring Heterogeneity
نویسندگان
چکیده
T past few years have seen increasing interest in taking the notion of customer lifetime value (CLV) and extending it to value a customer base (with subsequent links to corporate valuation). The application of standard textbook discussions of CLV leads to calculations based on a single retention rate. However, at the cohort level, retention rates typically increase over time. It has been suggested that these observed dynamics are due, in large part, to a sorting effect in a heterogeneous population. We show that failing to recognize these dynamics yields a downward-biased estimate of the residual value of the customer base (compared to an aggregate analysis that ignores these dynamics). We also explore the implications of failing to account for retention dynamics when computing retention elasticities and find that the frequently reported values underestimate the true effect of increases in underlying retention rates in a heterogeneous world.

Modeling Churn and Usage Behavior in Contractual Settings The ability to retain existing customers is a major concern for many businesses. However retention is not the only dimension of interest; the revenue stream associated with each customer is another key factor influencing customer profitability. In most contractual situations the exact revenue that will be generated per customer is uncert...

A Joint Model of Usage and Churn in Contractual Settings As firms become more customer centric, concepts such as customer equity come to the fore. Any serious attempt to quantify customer equity requires modeling techniques that can provide accurate multi-period forecasts of customer behavior. While a number of researchers have explored the problem of modeling customer churn in contractual sett...
متن کاملCustomer base analysis: partial defection of behaviourally loyal clients in a non-contractual FMCG retail setting
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) enjoys increasing attention as a countermeasure to switching behaviour of customers. Because foregone profits of (partially) defected customers are significant, an increase of the retention rate can be very profitable. In this paper, we focus on the treatment of a company’s most promising customers in a non-contractual setting. We build a model in order to...
متن کامل“Counting Your Customers” One by One: An Individual Level RF Analysis Based on Consumer Behavior Theory
In customer relationship management (CRM), ad hoc rules are often employed to judge whether customers are active in a “non-contractual” setting. For example, a customer is considered to have dropped out if he or she has not made purchase for over three months. However, for customers with a long interpurchase time, this three-month time frame would not apply. Hence, when assessing customer attri...
متن کاملUsing Regression based Control Limits and Probability Mixture Models for Monitoring Customer Behavior
In order to achieve the maximum flexibility in adaptation to ever changing customer’s expectations in customer relationship management, appropriate measures of customer behavior should be continually monitored. To this end, control charts adjusted for buyer’s/visitor’s prior intention to repurchase or visit again are suitable means taking into account the heterogeneity across customers. In the ...
