Eclipsing binaries as standard candles : HD 23642 and the distance to the Pleiades

چکیده
We present a reanalysis of the light curves of HD 23642, a detached eclipsing binary star in the Pleiades open cluster, with emphasis on a detailed error analysis. We compare the masses and radii of the two stars to predictions of stellar evolutionary models and find that the metal and helium abundances of the Pleiades are approximately solar. We present a new method for finding distances to eclipsing binaries, of spectral types A to M, using the empirical calibrations of effective temperature versus surface brightness given by Kervella et al. (2004). We use the calibration for K-filter surface brightness to determine a distance of 139.1 ± 3.5 pc to HD 23642 and the Pleiades. This distance is in excellent agreement with distances found from the use of theoretical and empirical bolometric corrections. We show that the determination of distance, both from the use of surface brightness relations and from the use of bolometric corrections, is more accurate and precise at infrared wavelengths than at optical wavelengths. The distance to HD 23642 is consistent with that derived from photometric methods and Hubble Space Telecscope parallaxes, but is inconsistent with the distance measured using Hipparcos parallaxes of HD 23642 and of other Pleiades stars.

The distance to the Pleiades from orbital solution of the double - lined eclipsing binary HD 23642 ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆
Combining precise B,V photometry and radial velocities, we have been able to derive a firm orbital solution and accurate physical parameters for the newly discovered eclipsing binary HD 23642 in the Pleiades open cluster. The resulting distance to the binary and therefore to the cluster is 132±2 pc. This closely confirms the distance modulus obtained by classical main sequence fitting methods (...

The study of detached eclipsing binaries is one of the most powerful ways to investigate the properties of individual stars and stellar systems. We present preliminary masses, radii and effective temperatures for the eclipsing binary WWAurigae, which is composed of two metallic-lined A-type stars. We also reanalyse the data on HD23642, an A-type eclipsing binary member of the Pleiades open clus...

Estimation of distances to nearby galaxies by the use of eclipsing binaries as standard candles has recently become feasible because of new large scale instruments and the discovery of thousands of eclipsing binaries as spinoff from Galactic microlensing surveys. Published measurements of distances to detached eclipsing binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud combine stellar surface areas (in ab...

Detached eclipsing binary stars provide a robust one-step distance determination to nearby galaxies. As a by-product of Galactic microlensing searches, catalogs of thousands of variable stars including eclipsing binaries have been produced by the OGLE, MACHO and EROS collaborations. We present photometric solutions for detached eclipsing binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) discovered b...

In the last decade, over 7000 eclipsing binaries have been discovered in the Local Group through various variability surveys. Measuring fundamental parameters of these eclipsing binaries has become feasible with 8 meter class telescopes, making it possible to use eclipsing binaries as distance indicators. Distances with eclipsing binaries provide an independent method for calibrating the extrag...
