چکیده
We estimate international technology spillovers to U.S. manufacturing firms via imports and foreign direct investment (FDI) between the years of 1987 and 1996. In contrast to earlier work, our results suggest that FDI leads to significant productivity gains for domestic firms. The size of FDI spillovers is economically important, accounting for about 14% of productivity growth in U.S. firms between 1987 and 1996. In addition, there is some evidence for imports-related spillovers, but it is weaker than for FDI. The paper also gives a detailed account of why our study leads to results different from those found in previous work. This analysis indicates that our results are likely to generalize to other countries and periods.

The impact of globalisation and trade on productivity per- formance of the Irish food manufacturing sector
Globalisation and international integration can yield efficiency gains through the promotion of competition and trade in markets for internationally traded goods. At the firm level, exposure to competitive pressures has created a necessity for firms to operate as close as possible to the technology frontier in order to survive. Furthermore, increased integration has lead to an influx of investm...

In a recent paper Helpman, Melitz and Yeaple (2002) argue firm heterogeneity leads to self-selection in the structure of international commerce. Only the most productive firms find it profitable to meet the higher costs associated with FDI; the next set of firms find it profitable to serve foreign markets through exporting; while the least productive firms find it profitable to serve only domes...

We develop a heterogeneous firm intra-industry trade model in which countries are asymmetric in both technology and size. In our model the productivity gaps and levels across countries are jointly determined by technological asymmetry and trade barriers. By assuming symmetry across countries, Melitz (2003)shows that increased exposure to IIT raise aggregate productivity for all countries via re...
متن کاملEntry of Foreign Multinational Firms and Productivity Growth of Domestic Firms: The case of Japanese firms
This paper examines whether and how the entry of foreign multinational firms affects productivity growth of domestically owned firms, using Japanese firm-level data for the period 2000-2007. Although there are a considerable number of studies conducting productivity analyses on foreign multinationals and domestic firms for the manufacturing sector, there are few such studies for the service sec...
متن کاملGlobalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2004 / 08 Outsourcing , foreign ownership , exporting and productivity : An empirical investigation with plant level data
We investigate the impact of international outsourcing on productivity using plant level data for Irish manufacturing. Specifically, we distinguish the effect of outsourcing of materials from services inputs. Moreover, we examine whether the impact on productivity is different for plants being more embedded in international markets through exporting or being part of a multinational. Our results...
