Risk ratios and odds ratios--what are they?

چکیده

A risk ratio (sometimes called relative risk, both abbreviated to RR) and an odds ratio (OR) are ways of expressing a comparison between two proportions. For example, in this paper, there are two randomised groups in the trial, women in the lateral position and women in the supported sitting position in the passive second stage of labour. The authors wanted to compare the proportions of instrumental births, episiotomies and perineal suturing in the two groups to see if there was any effect due to maternal position. A risk ratio gives the relative probability or chance of something happening in one group compared with the other, while an odds ratio gives the relative odds. Do you know what the difference is between probability and odds?

Misinterpreting Odds Ratio in the Articles Published in Korean Journal of Family Medicine

BACKGROUND In reporting results of case-control studies, odds ratios are useful methods of reporting findings. However, odds ratios are often misinterpreted in the literature and by general readers. METHODS We searched all original articles which were published in the Korean Journal of Family Medicine from 1980 to May 2011 and identified those that report "odds ratios." Misinterpretation of o...

آیا نسبت شانس برآورد مناسبی از خطر نسبی است؟

Relative risk (RR) and Odds ratio (OR) are two measures of risk which has been widely used in epidemiological studies. The cohort studies are designed to directly compute a relative risk, but the situation is somewhat more complicated in the case-control design. In these studies, the odds ratio gives a valid estimate of the effect size. There is not a serious problem if you don’t use of t...

The relative merits of risk ratios and odds ratios.

When a study outcome is rare in all strata used for an analysis, the odds ratio estimate of causal effects will approximate the risk ratio; therefore, odds ratios from most case-control studies can be interpreted as risk ratios. However, if a study outcome is common, the odds ratio will be further from 1 than the risk ratio. There is debate regarding the merits of risk ratios compared with odds...

Distributional interaction: Interpretational problems when using incidence odds ratios to assess interaction

It is well known that the incidence odds ratio approximates the risk ratio when the disease of interest is rare, but increasingly overestimates the risk ratio as the disease becomes more common. However when assessing interaction, incidence odds ratios may not approximate risk ratios even when the disease is rare. We use the term "distributional interaction" to refer to interaction that appears...
