Overview and some preliminary results from the COST-715 Action: “Meteorology applied to urban air pollution problems”
نویسندگان
چکیده
Urban meteorology and pollution are characterised by a number of atmospheric parameters and their evolution in time, which all have specific problems as to their monitoring, representativeness, parameterisation and modelling compared to rural situations. The main goal of the Action COST-715 (1998-2004) was to provide the best guidance on how meteorology may be included in pollution calculations related to urban areas. It aimed at increasing knowledge of, and the accessibility to, meteorological parameters that determine urban pollution levels, by comparing methods in use in European countries, to lead to recommendations on the best way of using routinely available meteorological information in air pollution assessments in urban areas. We present some results of COST-715 on: estimating the surface energy balance and the mixing height, the siting of meteorological measurements in the urban atmosphere, practices for forecasting pollution episodes and the availability and accessibility of data for prediction and assessment models.

Meteorology Applied to Urban Air Pollution Problems Cost 715
The requirements of the framework Directive on air quality assessment and management introduce real practical problems for the meteorological community. Some of the meteorological variables needed in urban air pollution assessments are not routinely measured and in normal circumstances the number of meteorological stations in urban areas is limited to a few sites often just at airports. The Eur...

The quality of the urban air pollution forecast critically depends on the mapping of emissions, the urban air pollution models, and the meteorological data. The quality of the meteorological data should be largely enhanced by using downscaled data from advanced numerical weather prediction models. These different topics, as well as the application of population exposure models, have traditional...

Cities interact with the atmosphere over a wide range of scales from the large-scale processes, which have a direct impact on global climate change, to smaller scales, ranging from the conurbation itself to individual buildings. The review presented in this paper analyzes some of the ways in which cities influence atmospheric thermodynamics and airborne pollutant transport. We present the main ...
