چکیده

We introduce the simultaneous optimisation of water-use effi ciency and nitrogen-use effi ciency of canopy photosynthesis. As a vehicle for this idea we consider the optimal leaf area for a plant in which there is no self-shading among leaves. An emergent result is that canopy assimilation over a day is a scaled sum of daily water use and of photosynthetic nitrogen display. The respective scaling factors are the marginal carbon benefi ts of extra transpiration and extra such nitrogen, respectively. The simple approach successfully predicts that as available water increases, or evaporative demand decreases, the leaf area should increase, with a concomitant reduction in nitrogen per unit leaf area. The changes in stomatal conductance are therefore less than would occur if leaf area were not to change. As irradiance increases, the modelled leaf area decreases, and nitrogen/leaf area increases. As total available nitrogen increases, leaf area also increases. In all the examples examined, the sharing by leaf area and properties per unit leaf area means that predicted changes in either are less than if predicted in isolation. We suggest that were plant density to be included, it too would further share the response, further diminishing the changes required per unit leaf area.

Effects of Nitrate Application on Amaranthus powellii Wats. : III. Optimal Allocation of Leaf Nitrogen for Photosynthesis and Stomatal Conductance.

Optimal allocation of leaf nitrogen maximizes daily CO(2) assimilation for a given leaf nitrogen concentration. According to the hypothesis of optimization, this condition occurs when the partial derivative of assimilation rate with respect to leaf nitrogen concentration is constant. This hypothesis predicts a linear increase of assimilation rate with leaf nitrogen concentration under constant ...

Ontogenetic changes in stomatal and biochemical limitations to photosynthesis of two co-occurring Mediterranean oaks differing in leaf life span.

A quantitative analysis was applied to the stomatal and biochemical limitations to light-saturated net photosynthesis under optimal field conditions in mature trees and seedlings of the co-occurring evergreen oak, Quercus ilex L., and the deciduous oak, Q. faginea Lam. Stomatal limitation to photosynthesis, maximal Rubisco activity and electron transport rate were determined from assimilation v...

Morphological Changes in Response to Drought Stress in Cultivated and Wild Almond Species

This study was undertaken to identify morphological changes in young seedlings of 5 Iranian almond species (Prunus dulcis, P. eburnea, P. eleagnifolia, P. haussknechti, and P. scoparia) under polyethylene glycol-induced drought stress. Drought stress caused a significant reduction in plant growth parameters such as fresh and dry weights of plant organs, leaf number, total leaf area, and leaf re...

تأثیر مقادیر کود نیتروژن و آب آبیاری بر عملکرد دانه و راندمان مصرف آب گلرنگ در اصفهان

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of nitrogen and irrigation on yield and yield components of safflower. Three nitrogen rates (0, 50 and 100 kg ha-1) under three irrigation levels (100% as control 80% as mild limited irrigation, and 60% of crop water requirement as severe limited irrigation) were investigated using a factorial laid out in a randomized comp...
