چکیده

Retrievals of LAI from inversion of canopy radiometric measurements, using the Li-Cor LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer and the Decagon AccuPar Ceptometer (a linear quantum probe) were analyzed and compared. Field data were collected from 34 sites in the boreal forest of interior Alaska, and sensitivity tests were conducted to estimate the effect of a variety of measurement conditions on the LAI retrievals. We also tested the response of estimated LAI to different values of the theoretical parameters in the retrieval algorithms. Uncertainty in the incident radiation level was magnified by the LAI retrieval, meaning that even small errors in this measurement significantly affected the LAI estimates. Changes in solar zenith angle over long data acquisition times also contributed to the errors. The most important quality control factors for accurate retrieval of LAI from field measurements were the incident radiation and solar zenith angle. A series of sensitivity tests showed that extreme values of leaf angle distribution could change LAI estimates, but our multi-angle measurements produced results consistent with a spherical leaf angle distribution. Alternative methods taken from the literature for post-processing of the data from the two instruments produced similar results for the LAI-2000, but widely different results for the Decagon AccuPar. Retrievals from the two instruments had an overall correlation coefficient r = 0.88, (P < 0.01). Agreement was considerably better in aspen stands (r = 0.85, P < 0.01, N = 43) than in spruce (r = 0.56, P < 0.05, N = 22). Some of the variability was attributed to spatial heterogeneity within stands, particularly sparse spruce canopies. Overall, our results suggest the retrievals were robust, and largely comparable between instruments over a range of measurement conditions, provided variability in measurement conditions was adequately characterized. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Improvement of Biomass Estimation in Forest Areas based on Polarimetric Parameters Optimization of SETHI airborne Data using Particle Swarm Optimization Method

Estimation of forest biomass has received much attention in recent decades. Airborne and spaceborne (SAR) have a great potential to quantify biomass and structural diversity because of its penetration capability. Polarizations are important elements in SAR systems due to sensitivity of them to backscattering mechanisms and can be useful to estimate biomass. Full Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture ...

Boreal forest leaf area index from optical satellite images: model simulations and empirical analyses using data from central Finland

A key variable controlling the global carbon, water and energy cycles is the leaf area index (LAI), which thus has an important role in current biosphere-atmosphere research. Several international networks promote the development of remote sensing techniques for global assessment of LAI. We present results from the VALERI (VAlidation of Land European Remote sensing Instruments) network’s test s...

Three-stage inversion improvement for forest height estimation using dual-PolInSAR data

This paper addresses an algorithm for forest height estimation using single frequency single baseline dual polarization radar interferometry data. The proposed method is based on a physical two layer volume over ground model and is represented using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) technique. The presented algorithm provides the opportunity to take advantages of t...

Estimation of leaf area index and the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation in a boreal forest

The aim of this dissertation is to assess the accuracy of different ground reference methods used to validate satellite based leaf area index (LAI) and the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (fPAR) products. LAI and fPAR are strongly linked, although they principally and practically measure different properties: LAI quantifies the areal interphase between soil and atmosphe...

Estimating energy balance fluxes above a boreal forest from radiometric temperature observations

The great areal extent of boreal forests confers these ecosystems potential to impact on the global surface-atmosphere energy exchange. A modelling approach, based on a simplified two-source energy balance model, was proposed to estimate energy balance fluxes above boreal forests using thermal infrared measurements. Half-hourly data from the SolarInduced Fluorescence Experiment, carried out in ...
