QPE: Using assumption-based truth maintenance for qualitative simulation
نویسنده
چکیده
Efficient qualitative simulators are crucial to continued progress in qualitative physics . Assumption-based truth maintenance systems (ATMS) were developed in part to simplify writin g such programs. This paper identifies several abstractions for organizing ATMS-based problem solvers which are especially useful for envisioning . In particular, we describe the many-world s database, which avoids complex temporal reference schemes ; how to organize problem-solvin g into justify/assume/interpret cycles which successively construct and extend partial solutions ; and closed-world tables, which provide a mechanism for making closed-world assumptions . We sketch the design of the Qualitative Process Engine, QPE, an implementation of Qualitative Proces s theory, to illustrate the utility of these abstractions . On the basis of our experience in developin g QPE and analysing its performance, we draw some general conclusions about the advantages an d disadvantages of assumption-based truth maintenance systems .

The Qualitative Process Engine : A study in Assumption-based Truth Maintenance
This paper describes how to use an assumption-based truth maintenance system (ATMS) to significantly speed up qualitative reasoning . Specifically, we introduce three organizing abstractions for ATMS-based problem solvers (many-worlds databases, justify/interpret cycles, and closed-world tables) . We illustrate their utility by describing the Qualitative Process Engine (qPE), an implementation ...

متن کاملComparison of Qpe and Qsim as Qualitative Reasoning Techniques
ii ABSTRACf Qualitative reasoning predicts and explains the behavior of physical systems using the system's structure through modeling and simulation. There are several approaches to qualitative reasoning. Two of the most prominent software implementations are QPE (Qualitative Process Engine) by Forbus and QSIM (Qualitative Simulation) by Kuipers. A comparison of the two systems is done on the ...
متن کاملReprint 968 Application of Radar-Raingauge Co-Kriging to Improve QPE and Quality Control of Real-time Rainfall Data
Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) often serves as an important input to hydrological and weather warning operations. Automatic raingauge (RG) data are not only fundamental in QPE but also act as the ground truth in warning operation and forecast validation. Quality control (QC) is required before the data can be used quantitatively due to systematic and random errors. Extremely large ...
متن کاملAssumption Management in Qualitative Medical Diagnosis
The Assumption-Based Diagnostician (ABD) project demonstrates the applicability of formal techniques of assumption-based reasoning to qualitative diagnosis, a task complicated by many types of assumptions . Our primary goal is to connect the medical-knowledge level to the logical level by automating the conversion of high-level diagnostic concepts such as "symptoms" and "faults" into the constr...
