Basal functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and psychological distress in recreational ecstasy polydrug users. MARK A WETHERELL & CATHARINE MONTGOMERY RUNNING HEAD: BASAL HPA FUNCTION IN ECSTASY USERS
نویسنده
چکیده
Rationale: Ecstasy (MDMA) is a psychostimulant drug which is increasingly associated with psychobiological dysfunction. While some recent studies suggest acute changes in neuroendocrine function, less is known about long term changes in HPA functionality in recreational users. Objectives: The current study is the first to explore the effects of ecstasy-polydrug use on psychological distress and basal functioning of the HPA axis through assessing the secretion of cortisol across the diurnal period. Method: Seventy-six participants (21 nonusers, 29 light ecstasy-polydrug users 26 heavy ecstasy-polydrug users) completed a substance use inventory and measures of psychological distress at baseline, then two consecutive days of cortisol sampling (on awakening, 30 minutes post awakening, between 1400-1600hrs and pre bed time). On day two, participants also attended the laboratory to complete a 20-minute multitasking stressor. Results: Both user groups exhibited significantly greater levels of anxiety and depression than nonusers. On day one, all participants exhibited a typical cortisol profile, though light users had significantly elevated levels pre-bed. On day two, heavy users demonstrated elevated levels upon awakening and all ecstasy-polydrug users demonstrated elevated pre-bed levels compared to non-users. Significant between group differences were also observed in afternoon cortisol levels and in overall cortisol secretion across the day. Conclusions: The increases in anxiety and depression are in line with previous observations in recreational ecstasy-polydrug users. Dysregulated diurnal cortisol may be indicative of inappropriate anticipation of forthcoming demands and hypersecretion may lead to the increased psychological and physical morbidity associated with heavy recreational use of ecstasy.

Everyday and prospective memory deficits in ecstasy/polydrug users Running Head: prospective memory impairments
The impact of ecstasy/polydrug use on real world memory (i.e., everyday memory, cognitive failures and prospective memory) was investigated in a sample of 42 ecstasy/polydrug users and 31 non-ecstasy users. Laboratory-based prospective memory (PM) tasks were administered along with self-report measures of PM to test whether any ecstasy/polydrug-related impairment on the different aspects of PM ...
متن کاملEveryday memory deficits in ecstasy-polydrug users.
Recent research suggests that not only does the use of recreational drugs impact on working memory functioning, but more ;everyday' aspects of memory (e.g. remembering to do something in the future) are also affected. Forty-three ecstasy-polydrug users and 51 non-ecstasy users were recruited from a university population. Each participant completed the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) and ...

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND Ecstasy/polydrug users have exhibited deficits in executive functioning in laboratory tests. We sought to extend these findings by investigating the extent to which ecstasy/polydrug users manifest executive deficits in everyday life. METHODS Forty-two current ecstasy/polydrug users, 18 previous (abstinent for at least 6 months) ecstasy/polydrug users, and 50 non-users of...
متن کاملPnm-12: Can Stress Lead to Infertility?
Background: The role that stress plays in infertility remains controversial and despite medical advances a large percentage of infertility remains unexplained. Clinicians and researchers consistently report that infertile women view infertility and its treatment as extremely stressful. Basic science has elucidated the linkages between the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) and hypothalamic-pitui...
متن کاملDifferences in prefrontal blood oxygenation during an acute multitasking stressor in ecstasy polydrug users.
BACKGROUND Cognitive deficits are well documented in ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine; MDMA) users, with such deficits being taken as evidence of dysregulation of the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) system. More recently neuroimaging has been used to corroborate these deficits. The present study aimed to assess multitasking performance in ecstasy polydrug users, polydrug users a...
