Gender - bending alligators use

چکیده

It’s a boy! Or is it? We live in an era of blurred gender lines, but for many reptiles this has always been a hot topic. In crocodilian as well as several turtle species, cranking up the thermostat a few degrees during a critical developmental window, called the thermo-sensitive period, will turn a whole clutch of eggs into males. Hormones also contribute to sex determination in these species, and exposure to female hormones – estrogens – can feminize alligators developing at a male-producing temperature. But while there is more than a decade of research on estrogenmediated sex reversal, the mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain largely elusive. Knowing that estrogens can communicate with cells using either of two receptors (ESR1 or ESR2), a team of scientists based in South Carolina, at the lab of Louis Guillette Jr, wanted to know which of these two receptors is responsible for changing baby boy alligators into baby girls.

Hindlimb function in the alligator: integrating movements, motor patterns, ground reaction forces and bone strain of terrestrial locomotion.

Alligator hindlimbs show high torsional loads during terrestrial locomotion, in sharp contrast to the bending or axial compressive loads that predominate in animals that use parasagittal limb movements. The present study integrates new data on hindlimb muscle function with previously obtained data on hindlimb kinematics, motor patterns, ground reaction forces and bone strain in order to (1) ass...

Gender differences in haemogregarine infections in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) at Savannah River, South Carolina, USA.

We report a host gender bias in haemogregarine infection characteristics in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, USA. Prevalence and severity in female alligators was higher than it was in males. The reason for this pattern is not clear.

Alterations in steroidogenesis in alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) exposed naturally and experimentally to environmental contaminants.

Many environmental contaminants alter the reproduction of animals by altering the development and function of the endocrine system. The ability of environmental contaminants to alter the endocrine system of alligators was studied both in a descriptive study in which juvenile alligators from a historically contaminated lake were compared to animals from a control lake and in an experimental stud...

Alligators as West Nile Virus Amplifiers

Recent evidence suggests that American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) may be capable of transmitting West Nile virus (WNV) to other alligators. We experimentally exposed 24 juvenile alligators to WNV parenterally or orally. All became infected, and all but three sustained viremia titers >5.0 log10 PFU/mL (a threshold considered infectious for Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes) for 1 to...

Seasonal variation in plasma sex steroid concentrations in juvenile American alligators.

Seasonal variation in plasma sex steroid concentrations is common in mature vertebrates, and is occasionally seen in juvenile animals. In this study, we examine the seasonal pattern of sex hormone concentration in juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) and make a limited comparison of these seasonal patterns on two different lakes in Florida. Male juvenile alligators from a r...
