PhET simulations: Should we show the invisible?
نویسندگان
چکیده
During hundreds of student interviews, we have seen students engage in productive science-like exploration with PhET Interactive Simulations (sims). Recently we have been working to determine what specific features of PhET sims are necessary to make them effective learning tools. In this study, we compare differences in student learning and sim investigation when the sim either shows or hides representations of abstract or invisible phenomena such as a magnetic field or electron flow in a wire. Specifically, we conducted individual interviews with introductory-level university physics students, some of whom were using Faraday’s Electromagnetic Lab as designed and others who used a version of the same sim but without the invisible representations. Preliminary results indicate that students who saw the representation of electron flow and the magnetic field are more ready to learn about flux compared to students who did not see these representations.

Over One Hundred Million Simulations Delivered: A Case Study of the PhET Interactive Simulations
The PhET Interactive Simulations are well-known resources that originated in physics and are now used in multiple science disciplines. Many new educational innovations are developed but do not find a large audience—PhET, however, has been successful in becoming widely-used. This is the first of several planned case studies of widely-used educational innovations to characterize the strategies us...

This paper introduces a new suite of computer simulations from the Physics Education Technology (PhET) project, identifies features of these educational tools, and demonstrates their utility. We compare the use of PhET simulations to the use of more traditional educational resources in lecture, laboratory, recitation and informal settings of introductory college physics. In each case we demonst...
متن کاملA Study of Educational Simulations Part I - Engagement and Learning
Interactive computer simulations with complex representations and sophisticated graphics are a relatively new addition to the classroom, and research in this area is limited. We have conducted over 200 individual student interviews during which the students described what they were thinking as they interacted with simulations. These interviews were conducted as part of the research and design o...
