Collimation in Transparent Projection Screens for Panoramic Augmented Reality Environments
نویسنده
چکیده
There are many types of display systems used in Augmented Reality (AR), each having specific application areas. Based on an extensive literature and technology review, this paper proposes the use of a transparent projection screen for users in a fixed position observing distant objects. The transparent projection screen is similar to head-up displays (HUDs) used in aircraft cockpits, since they both superimpose graphics on objects in the background. HUDs have been heavily researched, and one issue that has gotten attention is the need for collimation. Results indicate that performance in HUDs and the need for collimation depends on the real-superimposed object connectivity, i.e. how visually integrated the real and superimposed objects are. In HUDs, there has traditionally been no direct overlay of observed objects, just symbols and data at fixed screen locations (i.e. no object connectivity). AR, however, strives to perfectly overlay the real with virtual objects (i.e. full object connectivity). In the connectivity range between traditional HUDs and AR the need for collimation should be further examined. We therefore propose a series of experiments to determine the need for collimation in transparent projection screens.

Transparent Stereoscopic Display and Application
Augmented reality has become important to our society as it can enrich the actual world with virtual information. Transparent screens offer one possibility to overlay rendered scenes with the environment, acting both as display and window. In this work, we review existing transparent back-projection screens for the use with active and passive stereo. Advantages and limitations are described and...
متن کاملUsing a Panoramic Camera for 3D Head Tracking in an AR Environment
For Augmented Reality using a pair of transparent 3D glasses, a precise and fast method for head tracking is required, to determine the user’s position and direction of gaze in all six degrees of freedom. The methods currently available require expensive external sensors and have small working areas and/or other limitations. We propose a method that uses a panoramic camera that is mounted direc...
متن کاملMulti - User Immersive Stereo in Projection - Based Virtual Reality System
Recently, multi-screen projection systems are widely used in the field of virtual reality. Within the system bounded by screens, users can view the panoramic stereoscopic images projected onto the screens. In such an immersive environment, however, just one viewer can feel the natural depth sensation. In this paper, the authors propose a novel approach to realize a multi-user system, in which s...
متن کاملOptical Camouflage Using Retro-Reflective Projection Technology
This paper describes a kind of active camouflage system named Optical Camouflage. Optical Camouflage uses the Retro-reflective Projection Technology, a projection-based augmented–reality system composed of a projector with a small iris and a retroreflective screen. The object that needs to be made transparent is painted or covered with retroreflective material. Then a projector projects the bac...

This work presents an image-based approach to efficiently generate multiple non-planar projections of arbitrary 3D scenes in real-time. The creation of projections such as panorama or fisheye views has a number of possible applications, e.g., in geovirtual environments and in augmented reality. Our rendering technique is based on dynamically created cube map textures in combination with shader ...
