Paediatric Emergence Agitation: Management Options
نویسندگان
چکیده
Emergence Agitation (EA) is a common postoperative problem especially in children. It is more common in paediatric age group especially with low blood gas solubility inhalational agents like Sevoflurane and Desflurane. Other factors contributing to increase EA are head and neck surgeries, preoperative anxiety and pain. It increases the risk of postoperative physical trauma to patient like surgical site bleeding, psychological trauma to parents and delayed recovery. Various drugs have been described to decrease EA. In this review article, here we have discussed the management options of EA including nonpharmacological and pharmacological options. of 0.86 and area under ROC to be 0.77 at a PAED Score of 10. Recently, PAED score >12 has been shown to provide a greater sensitivity and specificity than a PAED Score≥10 [9].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Emergence agitation is a common postanaesthetic problem in children after sevoflurane anaesthesia. We aimed to compare the effects of ketamine and midazolam administered intravenously, before the end of surgery, for prevention of emergence agitation in children who received caudal block for pain relief under sevoflurane anaesthesia. METHODS 62 American Society of Ane...
متن کاملEffects of dexmedetomidine versus midazolam for premedication in paediatric anaesthesia with sevoflurane: A meta-analysis
Background Dexmedetomidine (DEX), an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, produces ideal sedation and early postoperative recovery for premedication in paediatric surgery, reducing preoperative anxiety and facilitating smooth induction of anaesthesia. We performed a meta-analysis to compare the effects of DEX and midazolam (MDZ) in paediatric anaesthesia with sevoflurane. Methods PubMed, Ovid, Web o...
متن کاملMidazolam does not reduce emergence delirium after sevoflurane anesthesia in children.
BACKGROUND Behavioral disturbance in children following sevoflurane anesthesia is a relatively frequent event. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a higher dose of preoperatively administered rectal midazolam compared with a lower would alleviate this phenomenon. Furthermore the impact of these two doses of midazolam on sedation at induction of anesthesia was compared. METHODS A tot...
