Abstract—In this paper, SHM (Selective Harmonic Mitigation) and SHE (Selective Harmonic Elimination) modulation techniques have been combined to produce appropriate pulses for four-leg three-level NPC (Neutral Point Clamped) inverter. In the proposed hybrid method, SHM technique is applied to phase legs in order to mitigate non-triplen harmonics (5 th , 7 th , …) and the fourth leg is controlled by SHE principle to eliminate important low order triplen harmonics (3 rd , 9 th , …) completely. In this context, it is demonstrated that using SHM instead of SHE modulator for phase legs leads to reduce vast range of harmonic orders in the NPC output voltage, significantly. Moreover, it is proved that presented hybrid switching technique has the ability of DC bus capacitors voltages balancing, inherently. Furthermore, analyses are performed to calculate the DC bus capacitances accurately to show 5% voltage ripple acceptably. Simulation and experimental results validate good dynamic performance of proposed hybrid modulation technique in firing the NPC inverter switches to generate low harmonic voltage waveforms supplying balanced and unbalanced loads while balancing the DC capacitors voltages in four-wire network with small DC link capacitors.

Five-level NPC-VSI Capacitor Voltage Balancing Using a Novel Clamping Bridge
A serious constraint in multilevel inverters is the capacitor voltage-balancing problem. The unbalance of the different DC voltage sources of the five-level Neutral Point Clamping Voltage Source Inverter (NPC-VSI) constituted the major limitation for the use of this power converter. To remedy to this problem, a new control solution to compensate the unbalanced DC voltages for the five-level NPC...
متن کاملA Four-Level Inverter Based Drive with a Passive Front End
Multilevel inverters are suited for high power drive applications due to their increased voltage capability. Specifically, as compared to three level inverters, for a given dc bus voltage, a four-level inverter is able to synthesize better waveforms with reduced device ratings. In a medium voltage drive, a conventional diode bridge rectifier is a low cost multilevel solution if the dc bus volta...

This paper presents a cascaded H-bridge multilevel boost inverter for electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid EV (HEV) applications implemented without the use of inductors. Currently available power inverter systems for HEVs use a dc–dc boost converter to boost the battery voltage for a traditional three-phase inverter. The present HEV traction drive inverters have low power density, are expensive, a...

In a conventional grid connected photovoltaic system employing centralized inverter with long strings connected across dc-link, the performance of the plant in terms of power generation and efficiency is not optimal especially during partial shading and/or panel mismatch conditions. To improve the power yield during such conditions, a splitmultistring configuration employing 3Level Neutral Poin...

In this paper, dynamic performance of a transformerless cascaded PWM static synchronous shunt compensator (STATCOM) based on a novel control scheme is investigated for bus voltage regulation in a 6.6kV distribution system. The transformerless STATCOM consists of a thirteen-level cascaded H-bridge inverter, in which each voltage source H-bridge inverter should be equipped with a floating and iso...
