چکیده

The performance enhancement of stretch shortening cycle (SSe) contractions has been well documented in the literature. However, the majority of these studies have been performed either on gross human systems for multijointed movements, or in isolated animal muscle studies using in-vitro preparations. This study was designed to apply the principles used for these invitro animal studies to the human system, under conditions that would allow results to be directly associated with a specific muscle or muscle group. Previous investigations by Lynch (1992) and Benoit and Dowling (1995) have supported the use of muscle models to predict elbow flexor torque and sse performance enhancement. The purpose of this study was to use an EMG based muscle model to investigate the possible relationship between sse tasks at different frequencies of elbow flexion-extension and performance enhancement of the elbow flexor muscles. A Hill based muscle model was used to predict elbow flexor torque of seven healthy male subjects (23-40 years of age) under voluntary and stimulated contraction conditions. EMG of the elbow flexors and extensors was recorded from the biceps brachii and triceps respectively. Elbow flexor stimulation was done transcutaneously with a voltage equivalent to a 60% MVe torque; stimulation lasted four seconds at a frequency of 50 Hz. A simulated constant muscle activation torque was also derived from the muscle model for all trials. Externally measured torque was measured using a strain gauge located on a

Objective: Stiffness is a characteristic of viscoelastic structures and is an effective factor in sports movement biomechanics, which is an important factor in motion production and neuromechanical control of human body. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between lower extremity stiffness and selected biomechanical variables during vertical jumps. Methods: 20 male physi...

The role of series elastic structures in prestretch-induced work enhancement during isotonic and isokinetic contractions.

The influence of series elastic structures on the dynamics of the contractile machinery was examined in the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) of five male Wistar rats, with respect to enhancement of work of a muscle-tendon complex after active stretch. Imposed isotonic and isokinetic contractions were preceded by either an isometric phase (PI) or an active stretch (PS). The effects of fibre length di...

Stretch-induced enhancement of mechanical work production in frog single fibers and human muscle.

The relations between the velocity of prestretch and the mechanical energy liberated during the subsequent isovelocity release were studied in contractions of frog single fibers and human muscles. During isometric contractions of frog single fibers, a ramp stretch of varied velocity (amplitude, 0.02 fiber length; velocity, 0.08-1.0 fiber length/s) followed by a release (amplitude, 0.02 fiber le...

Effects of prestretch at the onset of stimulation on mechanical work output of rat medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon complex.

Work output of rat gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle (N = 5) was measured for stretch-shortening contractions, in which initiation of stretch occurred prior to the onset of activation, and for contractions with an isometric prephase. Duration of the active prephase (prestretch and pre-isometric) varied from 20 to 200 ms. Subsequent shortening (from optimum length + 4 mm to optimum length -2mm)...

Effects of stretch on work and efficiency of frog (Rana pipiens) muscle.

Applying a small stretch to active muscle immediately before shortening results in an increase in force and work done during subsequent shortening. The basis of the increase is not fully understood, having important implications for work and efficiency, and how they are influenced through stretch. We used the anterior tibialis muscle of leopard frogs (Rana pipiens complex) to measure the oxygen...
