چکیده

We report the novel photoresponse of nanodevices made from azafullerene (C(59)N)-encapsulated single-walled carbon nanotubes (C(59)N@SWNTs), so called peapods. The photoconducting properties of a C(59)N@SWNT are measured over a temperature range of 10 to 300 K under a field-effect transistor configuration. It is found that the photosensitivity of C(59)N@SWNTs depends very sensitively on the temperature, making them an attractive candidate as a component of nanothermometers covering a wide temperature range. Our results indicate that it is possible to read the temperature by monitoring the optoelectronics signal of C(59)N@SWNTs. In particular, sensing low temperatures would become more convenient and easy by giving a simple light pulse.

Azafullerenes encapsulated within single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Methods of insertion of azafullerenes in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) at different temperatures were investigated, while the effects of the conditions applied on the structure of azafullerene-based peapods, namely, C59N@SWNTs, were explored. Morphological characteristics of C59N@SWNTs were assessed and evaluated by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Pa...

Stability, thermal homolysis and intermediate phases of solid hydroazafullerene C59HN.

Density functional (DFT) calculations, high-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results suggest that thermal homolysis of C59HN involves a remarkably stable intermediate C59N-C59HN* structure characterised by charge redistribution from a C59N* radical to a bonded C59HN.

Formation of Azafullerene Encapsulated Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Plasma Ion Irradiation Method

The synthesis of azafullerene C59N is realized through a nitrogen plasma irradiation method, which is confirmed by the analysis of mass spectroscopy. A plasma consisting of a fullerene negative ion C60 and the azafullerene positive ion C59NC60-C59N plasmais generated by means of an electron beam ionization. C60 and C59N ions are selectively irradiated to single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT...

Does a nitrogen matter? Synthesis and photoinduced electron transfer of perylenediimide donors covalently linked to C59N and C60 acceptors.

The first perylenediimide (PDI) covalently linked to an azafullerene (C59N) is described. PDI-C59N and PDI-C60 dyads where PDI acts as an electron-donor moiety have been synthesized by connection of the balls to the PDI 1-bay position. Photoexcitation of the PDI unit in both systems results in formation of the charge-separated state by photoinduced electron transfer from the singlet excited sta...

Nanoelectromechanical coupling in fullerene peapods probed by resonant electrical transport experiments.

Fullerene peapods, which are carbon nanotubes encapsulating fullerene molecules, can offer enhanced functionality with respect to empty nanotubes. Their prospective applications include, for example, data storage devices, single-electron transistors and spin-qubit arrays for quantum computing. However, the present incomplete understanding of how a nanotube is affected by entrapped fullerenes is...
