چکیده

A chart was developed which gives the volume-normalized extinction coefficient for log-normally modelled, multimodal particle volume distributions. The real part of the particle refractive index ranges from 1.30 to 1.70. Two adjustment charts modify the main chart for an imaginary part of the refractive index different from 0.02, and for a geometric standard deviation of the modal volume distribution, different from 2.0. The charts show that particles in the accumulation range, which has a mode in the 0.1 to 1 m diameter size interval, are optically the most active. Exact knowledge of the particle refractive index is imperative for fine particles, but of small importance for coarse particles.

Effects of particulate complex refractive index and particle size distribution variations on atmospheric extinction and absorption for visible through middle ir wavelengths.

A comprehensive sensitivity study has been made using Mie theory to determine the effect of realistic variations in values of real and imaginary parts of the complex index of refraction on volume extinction and absorption coefficients for a wide range of log normal particle size distributions (defined by geometric mean radius r(g) and geometric standard deviation sigma(g)). Wavelengths lambda f...

Multi-Spectral Atmospheric Column Extinction Analysis of Multi-Filter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer Measurements

MACE Analysis of MFRSR Multi-spectral Atmospheric Column Extinction (MACE) analysis of multi-filter rotating shadowband radiometer (MFRSR) measurements yield detailed time series information on the variations of the column amounts of atmospheric NO2 and ozone and of aerosol optical depth, including the effective particle size and variance of the aerosol size distribution. Retrieval of such deta...

Improved identification of the solution space of aerosol microphysical properties derived from the inversion of profiles of lidar optical data, part 1: theory.

Multiwavelength Raman/high spectral resolution lidars that measure backscatter coefficients at 355, 532, and 1064 nm and extinction coefficients at 355 and 532 nm can be used for the retrieval of particle microphysical parameters, such as effective and mean radius, number, surface-area and volume concentrations, and complex refractive index, from inversion algorithms. In this study, we carry ou...

Inversion of multiwavelength Raman lidar data for retrieval of bimodal aerosol size distribution.

We report on the feasibility of deriving microphysical parameters of bimodal particle size distributions from Mie-Raman lidar based on a triple Nd:YAG laser. Such an instrument provides backscatter coefficients at 355, 532, and 1064 nm and extinction coefficients at 355 and 532 nm. The inversion method employed is Tikhonov's inversion with regularization. Special attention has been paid to exte...

Bayesian assessment of uncertainty in aerosol size distributions and index of refraction retrieved from multiwavelength lidar measurements.

We investigate the assessment of uncertainty in the inference of aerosol size distributions from backscatter and extinction measurements that can be obtained from a modern elastic/Raman lidar system with a Nd:YAG laser transmitter. To calculate the uncertainty, an analytic formula for the correlated probability density function (PDF) describing the error for an optical coefficient ratio is deri...
