چکیده

We present a lattice Boltzmann model to describe the spreading of droplets on topologically patterned substrates. We apply it to model superhydrophobic behaviour on surfaces covered by an array of micron-scale posts. We find that the patterning results in a substantial increase in contact angle, from 110 o to 156 o .

Coarsening dynamics of dewetting nanodroplets on chemically patterned substrates.

Mesoscopic hydrodynamic equations are solved to investigate coarsening dynamics of two interacting nanodroplets on chemically patterned substrates. The effects of different parameters such as the surface chemical pattern, the slip length, the profile of the disjoining pressure, the size of the droplets, and the contact angles on the coarsening are studied. Our results reveal that the presence o...

Dispensing picoliter droplets on substrates using dielectrophoresis

Liquid dielectrophoresis is exploited to initiate rapid, transient flow of aqueous liquids along co-planar electrodes patterned on insulating substrates. The flow induced by the non-uniform electric field leads to a new electrostatic equilibrium. A reduced-order model predicts the transient motion of the rivulet. When the field is removed, capillary instability breaks up the rivulet into regula...

Multilayer deposition on patterned posts using alternating polyelectrolyte droplets in a microfluidic device.

We demonstrate that polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayer thin films deposited on patterned posts with incredibly large numbers of bilayers, which would not be possible with the conventional Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposition methods, can be obtained in a short process time using alternating polyelectrolyte droplets generated in a microfluidic channel, representing a significant advantage over the conve...

Mesoscopic structure of DNA–membrane self-assemblies: Microdiffraction and manipulation on lithographic substrates

Using microdiffraction techniques at the Advanced Photon Source, we have found evidence for local molecular alignment within the mesoscopic fibers of DNA–cationic membrane complexes, a system originally conceived as gene delivery vectors. Furthermore, these mesoscopic structures can be manipulated by using lithographically patterned microchannel arrays, so that the optical axes of individual fi...

Enabling efficient energy barrier computations of wetting transitions on geometrically patterned surfaces.

Proper roughness design is important in realizing surfaces with fully tunable wetting properties. Engineering surface roughness boils down to an energy barrier optimization problem, in which the geometric features of roughness serve as the optimization parameters. Computations of energy barriers, separating admissible equilibrium wetting states on patterned surfaces, have been demonstrated util...
