Thurstone's Case V model: A structural equations modeling perspective

چکیده
Modeling how we choose among alternatives, or more generally, modeling preferences, is one of the core topics of study in Psychology. Preferences can be studied experimentally using a variety of procedures, one of the oldest being the method of paired comparisons. This method remains quite popular in areas such as psychophysics and consumer psychology. For a good overview of the method of paired comparisons see David (1988). The most common paired comparisons procedure is what Bock and Jones (1968) called multiple judgment paired comparisons. Suppose preferences for n stimuli are to be investigated. In this procedure we collect a random sample of individuals from the population we wish to investigate, we construct all possible paired comparisons, and all individuals in the sample are presented all pairs one at a time. For each pair, each individual is asked to choose one stimuli within each pair and his or her response is coded using

Structural equation modeling of paired-comparison and ranking data.
L. L. Thurstone's (1927) model provides a powerful framework for modeling individual differences in choice behavior. An overview of Thurstonian models for comparative data is provided, including the classical Case V and Case III models as well as more general choice models with unrestricted and factor-analytic covariance structures. A flow chart summarizes the model selection process. The autho...

T here is an increasing interest in measuring subjective health outcomes and in this issue of Medical Care, Krabbe 1 provides us with a much needed discussion of the potential usefulness of Thurstone's approach for quantifying subjective health outcomes using ordinal information, such as rankings. As pointed out eloquently by Krabbe, Thurstone's articles, 2,3 have had a tremendous influence on ...
متن کاملOn Thurstone's Model for Paired Comparisons and Ranking Data
We investigate by means of a simulation study whether standard structural equation modeling techniques are suitable for estimating an unrestricted Thurstonian model to: (a) multiple judgment paired comparisons data, and (b) ranking data. We point out that Thurstone's (1927) original model is not a proper model for multiple judgment paired comparisons data as it assigns zero probability to all i...
متن کاملProviding a Model for Evaluating Suspicious Bank Accounts with the Approach of Determining Tax Effects Based on Structural Equation Modeling
The main approach of this study is to provide solutions to managers, economists, and tax auditors. To have a clearer perspective of the transactional relationships that distress the taxpayer transaction tax also help them to choose the best strategy to improve tax revenue. In this paper the fuzzy Delphi method was used to identify the indicators affecting suspicious bank accounts. The data coll...

This study aims to design the management model and planning of career promotion path in the employees of Tehran Bank Mellat Branches. The research method is descriptive and survey that was conducted by correlational and structural equations modeling. The statistical population (n=200) of the study included all employees of twenty branches in Tehran's Bank Mellat who were selected as the sample ...
