Residual Petroleum in Sediments Reduces the Bioavailability and Rate of Reductive Dechlorination of Aroclor 1242

چکیده
Residual petroleum hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are frequently found together at contamination sites. Intrinsic reductive dechlorination of PCBs at these sites is highly variable. Sediments of Silver Lake (MA), which contain ∼6.2% petroleum hydrocarbons, did not support PCB dechlorination in laboratory assays. Removal of petroleum components from Silver Lake sediments by solvent extraction did not alter their inability to support dechlorination. When other sediments known to support PCB dechlorination were inoculated with PCBdechlorinating organisms and amended with incremental increases of pure petroleum hydrocarbons (0-4 wt %/wt) or 6.2% petroleum hydrocarbons extracted from Silver Lake sediments, a reduction in both the rate and extent of PCB dechlorination occurred. The maximal rate of dechlorination observed in these assays appears to depend singularly on the aqueous-phase PCB concentrations. A singleregression equation relating maximal PCB dechlorination rates to the PCB concentrations in water was developed that accurately described the data presented here and in two previous studies (R2 ) 0.960). Petroleum components in sediments appear to provide a sorptive phase that lowers the solution concentrations of PCBs, thus diminishing the bioavailability of PCBs and rate of dechlorination.

FeSO4 Amendments Stimulate Extensive Anaerobic PCB Dechlorination
Anaerobic microbial reductive dechlorination of PCBs is important because it removes the chlorine substituents that block aerobic metabolism and it reduces PCB toxicity. Although this process occurs widely in nature, its extent is often limited to dechlorination of some of the chlorines in the meta positions of biphenyl. In this report we demonstrate the ability to achieve nearly complete meta ...

When microorganisms eluted from upper Hudson River sediment were cultured without any substrate except polychlorobiphenyl (PCB)-free Hudson River sediment, methane formation was the terminal step of the anaerobic food chain. متن کاملKinetics of polychlorinated biphenyl dechlorination by Hudson River, New York, USA, sediment microorganisms.
The kinetics of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) dechlorination by Hudson River (New York, USA) sediment microorganisms were investigated using Aroclor 1242 at 10 concentrations ranging from 0 to 900 ppm (0-11.2 micromol Cl/g sediment). The time course of PCB dechlorination and population growth were determined by congener-specific analysis and the most-probable-number technique, respectively, ov...

Microbial reductive dechlorination of commercial polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixtures (e.g., Aroclors) in aquatic sediments is crucial to achieve detoxification. Despite extensive efforts over nearly two decades, the microorganisms responsible for Aroclor dechlorination remained elusive. Here we demonstrate that anaerobic bacteria of the Dehalococcoides group derived from sediment of the Hou...
