چکیده

The surface-wave scattering processes responsible, in part, for the optical glory have never been compared with theoretical predictions. Here, THz impulse ranging is used to measure the time domain impulse response of spherical targets with sufficiently high temporal resolution to permit the surfacewave contribution to the total impulse response to be isolated. The first direct experimental comparison for the surface wave with Mie theory as well as the surface-wave approximation of van de Hulst is performed. Interference of the surface waves from a dielectric sphere is shown to lead to the frequency and angular intensity dependence of the THz glory. [S0031-9007(97)04970-3]

Angle-resolved second-harmonic light scattering from colloidal particles.

We report angle-resolved second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements from suspensions of centrosymmetric micron-size polystyrene spheres with surface-adsorbed dye (malachite green). The second-harmonic scattering profiles differ qualitatively from linear light scattering profiles of the same particles. We investigated these radiation patterns using several polarization configurations and part...

Influence of tip-sample interaction in a time-domain terahertz scattering near field scanning microscope

Apertureless near field measurements with a metallic tip are performed in the terahertz frequency range. Lateral scans are recorded for different time delays within a terahertz pulse. The forward scattered terahertz signal strongly depends on the time delay. At larger time delays, the tip-sample interaction leads to additional structures in the scan that do not correspond to a change in topogra...

Negative refractive index metamaterials from inherently non-magnetic materials for deep infrared to terahertz frequency ranges.

We present a new set of artificial structures which can exhibit a negative refractive index band in excess of 6% in a broad frequency range from the deep infrared to the terahertz region. The structures are composites of two different kinds of non-overlapping spheres, one made from inherently non-magnetic polaritonic and the other from a Drude-like material. The polaritonic spheres are responsi...

Electromagnetic Scattering from Dielectric Surfaces at Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Frequencies

With the demand for larger bandwidths and faster data speeds, wireless communication systems are expanding into the millimeter wave and terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Successful transition to higher frequencies, particularly for systems located in urban or indoor environments, will require a thorough understanding of the reflection, transmission, absorption, and scattering of...

Resonant terahertz transmission in plasmonic arrays of subwavelength holes

A review of transmission properties of two-dimensional plasmonic structures in the terahertz regime is presented. Resonant terahertz transmission was demonstrated in arrays of subwavelength holes patterned on both metals and semiconductors. The effects of hole shape, hole dimensions, dielectric function of metals, array film thickness, and a dielectric overlayer were investigated by the state-o...
