Reconsidering evidence for potential climate-related increases in jellyfish

چکیده
Attrill et al. (2007) in their paper ‘‘Climate-related increases in jellyfish frequency suggest a more gelatinous future for the North Sea’’ present data showing the occurrence of nematocysts in continuous plankton recorder (CPR) samples collected over more than 40 yr. They suggest that, contrary to previous work examining a shorter period (Lynam et al. 2004), cnidarian nematocysts ‘‘most likely to be from scyphozoans’’ have increased, especially since the mid1980s. However, several problems with their analyses make it difficult to evaluate their conclusions.

The jellyfish joyride: causes, consequences and management responses to a more gelatinous future.
Human-induced stresses of overfishing, eutrophication, climate change, translocation and habitat modification appear to be promoting jellyfish (pelagic cnidarian and ctenophore) blooms to the detriment of other marine organisms. Mounting evidence suggests that the structure of pelagic ecosystems can change rapidly from one that is dominated by fish (that keep jellyfish in check through competit...
متن کاملTo Pee, or Not to Pee: A Review on Envenomation and Treatment in European Jellyfish Species
There is a growing cause for concern on envenoming European species because of jellyfish blooms, climate change and globalization displacing species. Treatment of envenomation involves the prevention of further nematocyst release and relieving local and systemic symptoms. Many anecdotal treatments are available but species-specific first aid response is essential for effective treatment. Howeve...
متن کاملRise and fall of jellyfish in the eastern Bering Sea in relation to climate regime shifts
A steep increase in jellyfish biomass, primarily Chrysaora melanaster, over the eastern Bering Sea shelf was documented throughout the 1990s. Their biomass peaked in summer 2000 and then declined precipitously, stabilizing at a moderate level after 2001. The onsets of the outburst and decline coincided with transitions between climatic regimes. Specifically, 1989 marked the beginning of a perio...

of Proposed Work (250 words or less): The Bering Sea shelf has experienced significant climatic changes over the past 30 years. During this period of intense physical variation, dramatic and unexpected changes have taken place in the southeastern Bering Sea ecosystem, including large fluctuations in jellyfish biomass. To explore to effects of climate change on jellyfish populations, we will use...

© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org M explanations have been suggested for possible drivers of the apparent increase of jellyfish blooms in many coastal waters around the globe, including the depletion of predators and competitors of jellyfish by overfishing, accidental translocations, eutrophication of coastal waters, changes in freshwater flows, human modification o...
