Amodal volume completion: 3D visual completion
نویسندگان
چکیده
This work considers the common problem of completing partially visible artifacts within a 3D scene. Human vision abilities to complete such artifacts are well studied within the realms of perceptual psychology. However, the psychological explanations for completion have received only limited application in the domain of 3D computer vision. Here, we examine prior work in this area of computer vision with reference to psychological accounts of completion and identify remaining challenges for future work. 2005 Elsevier Inc. Visual cognition influences early vision: the role of visual short-term memory in amodal completion.
A partly occluded visual object is perceptually filled in behind the occluding surface, a process known as amodal completion or visual interpolation. Previous research focused on the image-based properties that lead to amodal completion. In the present experiments, we examined the role of a higher-level visual process-visual short-term memory (VSTM)-in amodal completion. We measured the degree ...
متن کاملVisual completion from 2D cross-sections: Implications for visual theory and STEM education and practice
Accurately inferring three-dimensional (3D) structure from only a cross-section through that structure is not possible. However, many observers seem to be unaware of this fact. We present evidence for a 3D amodal completion process that may explain this phenomenon and provide new insights into how the perceptual system processes 3D structures. Across four experiments, observers viewed cross-sec...
متن کاملComplete mergeability and amodal completion.
When image fragments are taken to correspond to the visible portions of a single occluded object, the object is said to 'amodally complete' behind the occluder. Kellman and Shipley (Kellman, P. J., & Shipley, T. F. (1991). A theory of visual interpolation in objective perception. Cognitive Psychology, 23, 144-221) argued that when the virtual contour extensions of such image fragments subtend a...
متن کاملAmodal completion in texture visual evoked potentials
Amodal completion refers to the phenomenological finding of perceiving partly occluded objects as continuing uninterrupted behind an occluder. The outlying problem is how the visual system processes such non-local stimuli because the known processes of early vision are spatially restricted operations which segregate local differences in the visual image, and little is known about their interact...
متن کاملTime course of amodal completion in face perception
The visual system often automatically perceives partially occluded objects as whole and complete. This phenomenon is called amodal completion, but its mechanism is not fully understood. In the first experiment, we measured the psychophysical time course of face amodal completion using a performance-based method and found the amodal completion took place between 100 and 300 ms after stimulus ons...
