On the stability of polydisperse colloidal crystals

چکیده
2014 The recently developed density functional theory of freezing is applied to an investigation of the mechanical and thermodynamic stability of polydisperse colloidal crystals. The colloidal particles are modelled by hard spheres with a continuous distribution p(03C3) of additive diameters. It is shown that such solid solutions cease to be stable beyond a critical degree of polydispersity, which depends somewhat on the shape of p(03C3), but is always of the order of 20 %. The problem of determining the fluid-solid coexistence curve is also briefly examined J. Physique 47 (1986) 1547-1553 SEPTEMBRE 1986,

How do polydisperse repulsive colloids crystallize?
A modified version of the Gibbs-ensemble Monte-Carlo method reveals how polydisperse charged colloidal particles can build complex colloidal crystals. It provides general rules that are applicable to this fractionated crystallization that stems from size segregation. It explains the spontaneous formation of complex crystals with very large unit-cells in suspensions of nanoparticles with a broad...
متن کاملMelting of polydisperse colloidal crystals in nonequilibrium.
The influence of a time-dependent oscillatory external field on the melting transition of a polydisperse colloidal crystal is examined by theory and computer simulation. In a monodisperse crystal the field just induces an overall dynamical mode which does not affect the melting line. For a polydisperse sample, on the other hand, the field shifts the melting line towards smaller temperatures. Co...
متن کاملPredicting phase equilibria in polydisperse systems
Many materials containing colloids or polymers are polydisperse: they comprise particles with properties (such as particle diameter, charge, or polymer chain length) that depend continuously on one or several parameters. This review focuses on the theoretical prediction of phase equilibria in polydisperse systems; the presence of an effectively infinite number of distinguishable particle specie...
متن کاملEffect of disorder on the optical properties of colloidal crystals.
Colloidal crystals offer a promising route for the formation of three-dimensional photonic crystals. The primary constraint in working with these materials is the disorder present in these self-assembled materials. Sphere vacancies, line dislocations, and random position errors all lead to a degradation in the optical properties. It is important to characterize these effects so as to guide furt...
متن کاملEffect of Milling Process on Colloidal Stability, Color and Rheological Properties of Pistachio Paste
Pistachio paste is produced from ground roasted kernel. This study focused on the influence of the milling process on colloidal stability, rheological behavior and color of pistachio paste. The colloidal stability of pistachio paste samples increased with a reduction of particle size from 31.4 to 15.10µm. The Herschel-Bulkley model was found to be the best model to describe the flow behavior of...
