The large scale structure of the galactic center at low radio frequencies

چکیده
A region about 10◦ around the galactic center (G.C.) has been studied in surveys available between 19.7 and 408 MHz. The maps show a trough near the G.C. sided by two intense emission peaks. Interpreting the observations as produced by an HII region that absorbs the radiation from bright nonthermal sources we propose a model consisting of four sources concentric with the G.C. and embedded in a diffused nonthermal background. Two sources, the broad and the narrow, are non-thermal and we determine their temperature spectrum (indices −2.7 and −2.4, respectively), the third source is an HII region for which we compute the emission measure, and the fourth source is Sgr A complex. The broad source is prominently seen below 408 MHz while the presence of the narrow source is reported here for the first time.

Low - Frequency Radio Transients in the Galactic Center
We report the detection of a new radio transient source, GCRT J1746−2757, located only 1. 1 north of the Galactic center. Consistent with other radio transients toward the Galactic center, this source brightened and faded on a time scale of a few months. No X-ray counterpart was detected. We also report new 0.33 GHz measurements of the radio counterpart to the X-ray transient source, XTE J1748−...
متن کاملMagnetic structure of our Galaxy: A review of observations
The magnetic structure in the Galactic disk, the Galactic center and the Galactic halo can be delineated more clearly than ever before. In the Galactic disk, the magnetic structure has been revealed by starlight polarization within 2 or 3 kpc of the Solar vicinity, by the distribution of the Zeeman splitting of OH masers in two or three nearby spiral arms, and by pulsar dispersion measures and ...

We summarize three recent publications which suggest that the Galactic center region Sagittarius B (Sgr B) may contain non-thermal radio components (Crocker et al. 2007, Hollis et al. 2007 and Yusef-Zadeh et al. 2007a). Based on new VLA matchedresolution continuum data at 327 MHz and 1.4 GHz, we find no evidence for large scale non-thermal radio emission at these frequencies; the spectral behav...
متن کاملFinding Radio Pulsars in and beyond the Galactic Center
Radio-wave scattering is enhanced dramatically for galactic center sources in a region with radius∼> 15 arc min. Using scattering from Sgr A∗ and other sources, we show that pulse broadening for pulsars in the Galactic center is at least 6.3 ν−4 seconds (ν = radio frequency in GHz) and is most likely 50–200 times larger because the relevant scattering screen appears to be within the Galactic ce...
متن کاملImprint of Intergalactic Shocks on the Radio Sky
Strong intergalactic shocks are a natural consequence of structure formation in the universe. These shocks are expected to deposit large fractions of their thermal energy in relativistic electrons (ξe ≃ 0.05 according to supernova remnant observations) and magnetic fields (ξB ≃ 0.01 according to cluster halo observations). We calculate the synchrotron emission from such shocks using an analytic...
