Simulating place field dynamics using spike timing-dependent plasticity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spatial firing fields (place fields) of rat hippocampal cells undergo changes when the rat runs stereotyped routes. Previously, Mehta et al. [Experience-dependent asymmetric shape of hippocampal receptive fields, Neuron 25 (2000) 700–715] indicated that spike timingdependent plasticity (STDP) might explain the observed shift of the place field center of mass and the development of skewness. In this study, by using simulations of spiking neurons with STDP, we demonstrate that STDP may cause a shift and negative skewness in the synaptic weights vector; however, we explain why these changes do not necessarily result in negative skewness of place fields. We further explore the parameters and additional mechanisms that favor the development of skewness. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Long-term modification of synaptic strength is one of the basic mechanisms of memory formation and activity-dependent refinement of neural circuits. متن کاملA biophysical model of synaptic plasticity and metaplasticity can account for the dynamics of the backward shift of hippocampal place fields.
Hippocampal place cells in the rat undergo experience-dependent changes when the rat runs stereotyped routes. One such change, the backward shift of the place field center of mass, has been linked by previous modeling efforts to spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). However, these models did not account for the termination of the place field shift and they were based on an abstract implemen...
متن کاملSpike-Timing Dependent Plasticity and the Cognitive Map
Since the discovery of place cells - single pyramidal neurons that encode spatial location - it has been hypothesized that the hippocampus may act as a cognitive map of known environments. This putative function has been extensively modeled using auto-associative networks, which utilize rate-coded synaptic plasticity rules in order to generate strong bi-directional connections between concurren...
