چکیده

Spontaneous activities of pigeon auditory nerve fibres were tested for a renewal process. The experiments falsified mutually statistically independent lengths of time intervals between successive actions potentials. However, the generation of action potentials on the eighth nerve by a complex system as the inner ear might not be described by a simple renewal process. The superposition of many different stochastic processes are conceivable in composed systems as the ear. Therefore, spontaneous activities have been described in the present experiments by a doubly embedded stochastic model, the Hidden Markov Model. The model is composed of hidden and observable states. These different hidden states generate with different probabilities the action potentials (observable states) on the auditory nerve. In addition to spontaneous activities, responses of pigeon auditory nerve fibres to white noise stimuli have been evaluated to investigate signal transduction. Wiener kernels have been identified by fast orthogonal search. The results suggest that nonlinearities are only instantaneous and that the investigated acoustically evoked neuronal activities might be described by cascades of linear and static nonlinear devices. Considerable improvements are possible by generalisation of the ordinary Wiener series, so that prior neuronal activity can be taken into account. Recorded inter-spike-interval distributions and rate-intensity functions can be described by a stochastic model derived from extended functional series.

Review: How do spontaneous and sensory-evoked activities interact?

Twenty years ago, the seminal work of Grinvald et al. revolutionized the view cast on spontaneous cortical activity by showing how, instead of being a mere measure of noise, it profoundly impacts cortical responses to a sensory input and therefore could play a role in sensory processing. This paved the way for a number of studies on the interactions between spontaneous and sensory-evoked activi...

Effects of general anesthesia with propofol on thalamocortical sensory processing in rats.

The effects of anesthetics on the transmission and processing of sensory information within the thalamocortical pathway and the underlying mechanism are not fully understood. Using the extracellular recording technique, we investigated the changes of spontaneous and stimulation-evoked activities within and between the ventral posteromedial nucleus (VPM) and primary somatosensory cortex barrel f...

Generating Antithetic Random Variates in Simulation of a Replacement Process by Rejection Method

When the times between renewals in a renewal process are not exponentially distributed, simulation can become a viable method of analysis. The renewal function is estimated through simulation for a renewal process simulation for a renewal process with gamma distributed renewal times and the shape parameter a > 1. Gamma random deviates will be generated by means of the so called Acceptance Rejec...

Cerebellar Giant Synaptosomes: a Model to Study Basal and Stimulated Release of [3H]gamma-Aminobutyric Acid

Background: Neurotransmitter release is an essential link in cell communication of the nervous system. Many investigations have focused on gamma amino butyric acid (GABA)-ergic neurotransmission, because it has been implicated in the pathophysiology of several central nervous system disorders. To bypass complications related to homo- and heterosynaptic modulation and to avoid indirect interpret...
