The Dissipative Merger Progenitors of Elliptical Galaxies

چکیده
We address the deviations of the scaling relations of elliptical galaxies from the expectations based on the virial theorem and homology, including the “tilt” of the “fundamental plane” and the steep decline of density with mass. We show that such tilts result from dissipative major mergers once the gas fraction available for dissipation declines with progenitor mass, and derive the scaling properties of the progenitors. We use hydrodynamical simulations to quantify the effects of major mergers with different gas fractions on the structural properties of galaxies. The tilts are driven by the differential shrinkage of the effective stellar radius as a function of dissipation in the merger, while the correlated smaller enhancements in internal velocity and stellar mass keep the slope of the velocity-stellar mass relation near V ∝ M. The progenitors match a straightforward model of disc formation in ΛCDM haloes. Their total-to-stellar mass ratio within the effective radius varies as M/M ∝ M, consistent with the effect of supernova feedback. They are nearly homologous in the sense that the dark-matter fractions within the effective and virial radii scale with mass in a similar way, with only a weak decline of density with mass. The progenitor radius is roughly R ∝ M, compatible with today’s intermediate late-type galaxies. This may indicate that the latest dissipative mergers in the history of ellipticals involved relatively big discs. The dissipative gas-to-stellar mass ratio is predicted to decline ∝ M, similar to the observed trend in today’s blue-sequence galaxies. Such a trend should be observed in relatively massive gaseous galaxies at z ∼ 1 − 4. The corresponding “baryonic” relations are consistent with homology and spherical virial equilibrium, V ∝ R ∝ M 1/3 bar .

Stellar Kinematics of Merging Galaxies: Clues to the Origins of Elliptical Galaxies
There is signiÐcant evidence suggesting that mergers of galaxies produce elliptical galaxies. To determine whether the known kinematic properties of elliptical galaxies are consistent with those of their suggested progenitors, we have examined the stellar velocity dispersion in 11 nuclear regions within starbursting infrared-luminous galaxies. All of these galaxies are in some stage of merging....
متن کاملThe Fundamental Plane and merger scenario I. Star formation history of galaxy mergers and origin of the Fundamental Plane
We perform numerical simulations of galaxy mergers between star-forming and gas-rich spirals in order to explore the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We consider particularly that the origin of the slope of the FP is essentially due to the non-homology in structure and kinematics of elliptical galaxies and accordingly investigate structural and kinematical properties...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملAre disk galaxies the progenitors of giant ellipticals?
A popular formation scenario for giant elliptical galaxies proposes that they might have formed from binary mergers of disk galaxies. Difficulties with the scenario that emerged from earlier studies included providing the necessary stellar mass and metallicity, maintaining the tight color-magnitude relation and avoiding phase space limits. In this paper we revisit the issue and put constraints ...
متن کاملFormation of Globular Clusters in Galaxy Mergers
We present a high-resolution simulation of globular cluster formation in a galaxy merger. For the first time in such a simulation, individual star clusters are directly identified and followed on their orbits. We quantitatively compare star formation in the merger to that in the unperturbed galaxies. The merging galaxies show a strong starburst, in sharp contrast to their isolated progenitors. ...
